You’ll want something luxurious, but not overgrown or messy, for a realistic look. Tuda’s 30mm option is one of the most popular options on the market, with overwhelmingly positive feedback.

This artificial grass is designed for use in virtually any yard and includes drainage holes, so you won’t have to worry about your yard becoming water-logged after a heavy rain. There is also no need for sand infilling, which is common in most turfs. One particularly noteworthy feature is that the Tuda is also UV protected, ensuring that its colour does not fade over time.

There are a few sparse areas here and there depending on the cut, but overall, this artificial grass has a rich, natural grass look.

The Berlin grass looks great all year, and because it’s shorter than some other options on the gardening market, it doesn’t look like you’ll have to mow it anytime soon. Although it isn’t as thick and luxurious as some of the other options on this list, it does have the appearance of a real lawn, which is a huge plus. This grass also eliminates the possibility of muddy footprints. It is simple to clean and requires only water.

The grass isn’t as thick as it is in some other places, but that’s part of the appeal for some people. You won’t be able to easily sink your fingers or toes into the fibres, but you’ll still have a great-looking, realistic-looking lawn.

It’s an excellent choice for a lush, fresh-looking lawn that will make your garden look welcoming all year long, regardless of the weather. This is a little deeper than some of the more common options on the market, with a 40mm pile, and it provides a lush, ‘dip your toes in’ kind of experience.

The 40mm artificial turf, like all Tuda products, is UV stabilised to ensure that your aesthetic lasts as long as possible. Furthermore, the latex is completely safe to use around pets and children – ideal if you want peace of mind when it comes to your family’s safety. Unfortunately, because it isn’t properly wrapped, you may have difficulty finding a place for it when it arrives. Aside from that, it’s difficult to find anything to criticise.

The Lisbon grass, like other Tuda products, has drainage holes to help you manage and maintain your garden. Furthermore, the product is delivered relatively quickly, allowing you to begin working on your new project as soon as possible. Remember to prepare the surface of your yard before applying this grass, as it can be difficult to lay down over bumps and lumps. How to Install Artificial Grass?

Artificial grass installation is actually quite simple and can be completed even with limited DIY knowledge. You will receive installation instructions with your product, and if you do not, there are a plethora of DIY help videos available on the internet (see below).

We’ve also devised a simple 10-step process suitable for any installation for those who are interested in the steps involved –

Measure your garden and plan the location of your new artificial turf.

Calculate the length and width of the area you want to turf using a tape measure.

If your garden isn’t a simple rectangular shape, divide it into smaller rectangles to calculate the total square metres of coverage needed. Then add these up to figure out how much you’ll need.

But your new artificial grass!

Purchase your new artificial grass from your preferred supplier. If possible, find a supplier who sells the grass in the length/width that you require. If this is not possible, try to obtain enough to meet your square metre requirements. Some people like to order an extra 10% to account for waste and extra needs.

Get rid of any existing turf, decking, or patio.

To remove any existing grass, you may need to use a turf cutter. Before laying your grass, remove any old decking or patio. Excavate the cleared area to a depth of around 50mm and spray the entire area with a strong weed killer.

Spread a layer of sand over your newly excavated area.

To firm up the area, apply a base layer of builder’s sand. This should be applied to a depth of 30-75mm. Consider your new grass’s pile height and how tall it will appear once installed. It should ideally be level with other parts of your garden, such as the paving.

Smooth out any bumps or debris on the surface.

The sand should be compacted and extremely firm beneath your feet. To ensure that the surface is level, use a spirit level. If you don’t want to spend the money on a heavy roller, you can compact the surface with a scaffold board and hammer.

Check for any bumps or debris that may cause an uneven appearance once the artificial turf is laid over the top.

Install your weed membrane (if not built-in to your new fake grass)

A weed membrane is built into the back of some products. If yours does not, you can get one for almost nothing. Spread the weed membrane over the entire area to protect it from weed growth. To keep your sheet in place, nail pins into the membrane around the perimeter.

Roll out your artificial lawn across your newly prepared area.

Roll out your lawn over the freshly prepared area. When stretched out onto the garden, it should be laid at right angles, with the rolls laying side by side.

To adjust the width of some rolls, you may need to use a craft knife. If this is the case, flip the grass over and cut along a straight line using the tread marks on the back.

If each strip of lawn is not facing in the same direction, it may be difficult to distinguish between the individual strips of grass after they have been laid.

The grass pile in an artificial lawn usually has a lean to it. It’s generally recommended that you point this lean towards the house, so that the lawn appears full and lush to anyone looking at it from the house.

If your grass has been rolled up for an extended period of time, it may take some time to settle into its natural position once laid out on the lawn. Allow the lawn to lie naturally on the ground for 24-72 hours before sewing the seams together.

Join the seams together

This is most likely the most difficult step in installing your new grass. The various lengths of grass must be neatly joined together.

Joining tape should be spread along the joining, underneath the grass, where the seams for each of the artificial grass lengths meet. The grass should be folded outwards and adhesive applied to the tape, then folded back down so that both grassy edges are on their own side of the tape (thereby joining them together).

Make certain that no part of the grass pile comes into contact with the adhesive. Only the underside should be glued.

Use pins to fix the edges of each roll of lawn

Using a hammer and joining pins, the edges of the lawn rolls should be fixed as 200mm intervals, to prevent any area of the grass becoming loose. The grass pile should naturally disguise the heads of the pins.

Ruffle grass fibres along the joins and where pins have been fixed

To ensure that the pin-heads and joining edges of each grass length are not visible, you should use a wire brush to ruffle the surface of the pile and help disguise any visible signs of the installation. Your grass should now be looking somewhere near complete!

Cut and trim the edges of your grass, achieving a neat fit between walls & the edge of the garden

If you’re happy that the installation has gone well and your pile is securely fastened, you should go ahead and tidy up any untidy corners or edges using a craft knife.

What Exactly Is Artificial Grass?

Artificial grass, also known as ‘fake grass’ or ‘astro-turf,’ is a surface made of plastic polymers that is designed to resemble natural grass.

It is frequently used in sports because it is low-maintenance and can withstand heavy footfall with little or no damage.

When compared to traditional lawns, it has several distinct advantages. These are some examples:

It is free of mud and dirt, making it ideal for pets and children.
Simple to disinfect and clean
It requires almost no maintenance – no mowing is required on a regular basis.
It may be less expensive because you will not need a lawnmower.
It does not require re-seeding or treatment.
There are no dead grasses, weeds, or patchiness.
It frequently has drainage, making it less susceptible to waterlogging.
It does not require sunlight or regular watering to remain healthy.

Granted, artificial grass isn’t perfect and has drawbacks –

To keep its appearance, it must be cleaned on a regular basis.
After extended use, it must be replaced.
When it reaches the end of its useful life, it frequently ends up in a landfill.

The six most important factors to consider before purchasing artificial grass are as follows:

Pile height

The pile height of artificial grass is typically 25mm to 37mm or higher. We wouldn’t recommend any grasses larger than 37mm because they can look squashed and ‘trodden-in’ after a lot of use.

If you prefer short, sharp grass that may appear a little thin but is neat and tidy, we recommend a pile height of 25mm – 30mm.

If you want thick, quality grass with a full appearance but a little messier, look between 30mm and 37mm.

Any grass with a pile height of 30mm or greater will look thick, natural, and bouncy underfoot. This height is usually found to be the ideal middle ground that most people prefer.

Density

Another factor in determining how thick and natural a product appears is its density. In general, the heavier the pile, the more piles per square metre.

A weight of 3kg per metre squared usually denoted a high-quality product that was thick enough to maintain a pleasing appearance.

Colour

The colour of your new lawn is important, but it all comes down to personal preference. Most retailers will have a variety of colours available, ranging from light-green to full-colored green and even deep dark greens if desired.

If you’re not sure about the pile colour before purchasing, look through the reviews for genuine installation photos and product imagery. If you are still unsure, you should probably request a free sample or go in-store to purchase so that you can choose the best colour for you.

Drainage

The best artificial grass products usually have drainage holes built into the base. This prevents water from pooling and flooding the garden, as can happen with natural grass lawns.

Despite the fact that most products include this as a standard feature, there are some that do not. If drainage is important to you (for example, if you live in an area prone to heavy rainfall and flooding), always make sure that it is included before purchasing.

UV Defense

Many fake grasses can fade from their intended colour and look very unsightly after only a few years if not protected from the sun’s UV rays.

It’s critical that your chosen supplier considers the effects of the sun, or you may need to replace your lawn sooner than you think.

A number of retailers have begun to offer 5- to 10-year warranties and guarantees on their products. These suppliers are likely to be more expensive, but it may be worth it if it ensures the quality of your lawn for years to come.

Animal and child friendliness

Last but not least on our list of things to think about before buying is whether or not your new product is suitable for animals and children.

Some retailers will expressly state that their products are not suitable for this use. In general, these are products made with low-cost, toxic materials that can be harmful to humans and animals. Whether you have children or animals, these are products you should probably avoid. These are not the kinds of materials you want to introduce into your home or community!

Fortunately, all of the products in our top 7 are both animal and child friendly.

If you have a dog, we’d recommend looking at short-to-mid length pile height grass because it’s easier to clean and disinfect.
