Best adult BMX bikes buying guide

You can’t just stand there and watch.
That doesn’t trigger a rush of adrenaline.
You just have to do it to get the whole experience, to feel that irresistible high as you speed madly at that ramp, knowing full well you’re about to attempt a double barspin – and land it clean!
In BMX, there is no vicarious living; everything is done in the first person.

But there’s the bike first, before the bunny hop.
You’ll need a vehicle to get about in.
How do you know what you need if this is your first step into the world of BMX?
Is there a bike that is right for you or are all bikes the same?
What size should it be?
What kind of material should the bike be built of?
What are the characteristics that can catapult you to fame as a freestyler?

What exactly is BMX?

Bicycle motocross is abbreviated as BMX.
Young cyclists began imitating their motocross idols by executing stunts and racing on bicycles instead of motorcycles, and the sport grew from there.
Although the start of the 1971 motocross documentary On Any Sunday, which shows kids riding their Schwinn Stingray bikes off-road, is credited with launching the sport’s popularity, there is 1950s BMX video from Amersfoort, Netherlands.

Where are you going to ride?

Depending on where you ride your BMX bike, the physical needs will be varied.
Street, dirt, park, flatland, and racetrack are the five riding scenarios (each requiring distinct bike features).
Yes, there is some ambiguity between the many sorts of bicycles.
Personal preference, as usual, is the ultimate deciding factor.
The following are some of the most important distinctions between BMX bikes.

Consider it a form of bike parkour.
Cruising around an urban setting, waiting for a set of stairwells and rails to inspire me.
This bike has to be a little tougher and heavier to take those very hard hits.

Dirt: If you want to get large air, you’ll need a well-built bike that can withstand bails in mid-flight.
These motorcycles have knobby tyres with deeper, thicker tread to provide the necessary off-road traction.

Park: These bikes are designed to be used in a controlled indoor area to do stunts.
Because there are no rough roads or grip issues, the tyres can be thinner and have fewer treads.
These bikes are often lighter than street or dirt bikes.

Flatland: You’re more concerned with grace than big air if you’re interested in this kind of riding.
This bike has a unique frame that focuses on achieving balance in a range of riding situations.
Front and rear pegs, a system that prevents brake wires from being tangled during 360° revolutions, and a rear hub that allows the wheel to roll rearward freely are all included.
These motorcycles have slippery treads on their tyres.

On a race bike, there are two immediately visible distinctions.
These bikes nearly always include brakes and a larger chainring/sprocket (the component of the crank that the chain wraps around) to allow the user to move faster.
Bikes designed for racing are also lightweight.

Brakes are an important element to consider when purchasing an adult BMX bike.

BMX and brakes are not the best of friends, as scary as that may sound.
The cords get in the way, twist up, and make it impossible to perform some stunts.
Furthermore, the lever can damage the rider in the excitement of the moment or during a nasty spill.

However, the normal biker cannot teleport to the park; instead, he or she must ride through traffic to reach a location, which necessitates the use of brakes.
While brakes might be an annoyance or a hazard when performing acrobatics, they are a must for a rookie rider when touring (your sneakers’ soles can only last so long)!

In BMX, what is the compromise?
Only the rear brakes are used.
Brakes situated within the rear triangle on the back end of the bike frame are out of the way of the rider on a bike made for stunts.

Rims and bearings

Bearings are the little rings with metal balls found inside your bike’s spinning or rotating sections.
These can be opened or sealed depending on your preference.

Bearings that are not sealed are less expensive, but they wear out faster.

Sealed bearings are more expensive, but they last longer and move more smoothly.

Single, double, or triple-walled rims are available.
Each level increases the rim’s strength, making it less prone to buckling under impact, but it also raises the price.

Types of tyres

Tires for BMX bikes are made specifically for the type of riding you do the most.
Slick, multi-purpose, and knobby are the three broad classifications.

A slippery tyre has very little tread.
Although these tyres are designed for flatland, some riders utilise them for parks and ramps.

Multi-purpose: This tyre has a bit more tread than a standard tyre, but not enough to provide much resistance.
This is the tyre to pick if you plan on riding your bike in a range of circumstances or just want to stick to street and park riding.

Knobby: These tyres are thicker and have deeper grooves to provide extra traction in the dirt and on trails.

Thickness and air pressure are two other factors to consider when buying BMX tyres.

A BMX tire’s thickness ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 inches, and the majority are 20 inches in diameter.
This will be written on the side of the tyre, for example, as 20 x 1.5.
Thinner tyres are often faster, whereas thicker tyres improve balance and traction.

The lower the air pressure in the tyre, the more give it has.
Lower pressure (40 psi to 70 psi) can provide you softer landings if you do a lot of trick riding on rougher surfaces.
Tires with a higher pressure (90 psi or more) travel faster.
When speed is the most critical element, these are preferable.

Hubs

The hub is the centre of the wheel, and the rear wheel is very important on BMX bikes.
Freewheel, cassette, freecoaster, and coaster brake are the four types of hubs.

When you’re not pedalling, you can use a freewheel to coast.
One piece includes both the cog and the ratchet.
It’s an external component that’s threaded onto the hub.

When you’re not pedalling, a cassette lets you to coast.
The main distinction is that the ratchet is located inside the hub rather than on the cog.
It has the advantage of being lighter and easier to maintain than a freewheel.
The majority of BMX bikers favour this option.

The freecoaster hub allows the back wheel to coast backwards (as well as forward).

When the cyclist pedals backwards, the coaster brake will stop the bike.
It’s useless for freestylers.
It will even restrict the rider from attempting many tricks.

Size

A BMX bike isn’t like any other bicycle.
To do tricks, a smaller frame is required, thus both youngsters and adults ride bikes with the same wheel size (20 inches in diameter).
The top tube, which extends from the seat to the handlebars, is used to determine the bike’s size difference.
As previously said, everything in BMX eventually comes down to personal preference, but top tube length is generally tied to rider height.

FAQ

Q. What kind of BMX safety equipment should I get?

A. You must wear a helmet.
There will be no compromising.
For those instances when you fall backwards, get one that can protect the back of your head.
Gloves are also required.
When you fall, they will protect your hands from the grips on your bike as well as the concrete (or mud).
Knee and elbow protectors are also recommended.
The more secure you are, the more likely you are to feel ready to try that trick that has been eluding you.

Q.What is a bash guard, exactly?

A. A bash guard, as the name implies, is a shield that protects something on your bike, usually the drivetrain, when you crash with a stationary object.

Q. What are the purposes of the short tubes attached to the BMX bike’s wheels?

A. Those small tubes are known as pegs.
They enable you to do a variety of feats.
You can stand on them, grind on them, or perform a peg bonk with them!
There are no restrictions.
You’ll be able to do it eventually if you’re brave enough to try.
