How To Buy The Best anti-colic bottle – Updated 2022

Best anti-colic bottles

Looking to buy the best anti-colic bottle? Check out our guide below and you’ll be well-placed to select the right one for you.

For parents of colicky babies, we have both good and bad news. The good news is that by the time your kid is four months old, colic should be gone. The bad news is that colic can linger up to four months in your infant.

Colic is a strange illness that affects a lot of babies. Repeated, consistent spells of weeping that do not end with consoling are a telltale indicator of colic. Anti-colic bottles, which prevent babies from swallowing air as they eat, are recommended by many clinicians for babies with these symptoms. Gas is common in colicky babies, although it’s unclear if this is the cause or a by effect of inhaling air during prolonged crying fits. Anti-colic bottles appear to aid many people in any case.

But what are the qualities of a good anti-colic bottle, and how can you choose the correct one for you? Find out which anti-colic bottle would make your baby’s — and your — life easier.

Colic or something else as a key consideration?

There is no way to test for colic, unfortunately. If a baby cries for more than three hours per day for more than three days per week for three weeks or more, they are labelled “colicky.” In all other ways, colicky newborns are healthy: they eat well and gain weight, they spit up occasionally but not frequently, and their stool is of normal consistency and regularity.

Of course, babies cry for causes other than colic. If your infant isn’t gaining weight, has a poor suck reflex, or vomits frequently, see a paediatrician for a more accurate diagnosis.

Is your baby breastfed or bottle fed?

Bottle-fed babies will most likely transition to an anti-colic bottle without difficulty. Those who have been breastfed for the majority of their lives may be resistant. You don’t have to stop nursing because your baby is colicky; try pumping and bottle feeding before your baby’s fussy period to see if it helps. If you want to try an anti-colic bottle but prefer to nurse, seek for bottles with soft silicone nipples that closely resemble the human body.

Ventilation systems

Air is vented by all anti-colic bottles, however different bottles achieve this purpose in different ways. It’s tough to say which approach is ideal because colic isn’t fully understood, but there are three primary possibilities.

To route air to the back of the bottle, some bottles have a valve system in the nipple. These bottles are easier to clean and reassemble because they have fewer pieces.

Other versions include an internal venting tube system that pulls air away from the nipple. Bottles with these techniques work well, but cleaning and reassembling them can be time consuming.

Some bottom-venting system designs that vent air through the bottle’s bottom have recently been introduced. This technique is effective and simple to clean, but if anti-colic bottles are not screwed together correctly, they might produce a mess.

Age

It’s crucial to remember your baby’s age. To avoid gagging on fluids provided too quickly, younger newborns require slow-flow nipples. Similarly, older babies are irritated by a nipple’s modest speed for newborns. Keep this in mind when shopping, and if your colicky kid is still young, make sure you’ll be able to swap out the nipples later.

Smaller 4-ounce bottles are intended for young newborns, whereas larger 8- to 9-ounce bottles are recommended for older babies. However, there’s nothing stopping you from saving money by filling an 8-ounce bottle with 4 ounces of liquid. The main concern is nipple flow.

Materials

Plastic or glass are used to make anti-colic baby bottles. Both materials offer benefits and drawbacks.

Glass bottles are less prevalent and more expensive than plastic ones. They’re smaller, making them easier to transport in a diaper bag, and they won’t shatter if dropped. Some parents, on the other hand, are concerned about the toxins that may seep into the milk. BPA was banned in baby bottles by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2012, and it is prohibited in most nations. Not only will the safest anti-colic plastic bottles be BPA-free, but they will also be devoid of phthalates and PVC.

Microwave and freezer safe labels can be found on many plastic bottles. However, because microwaves can create dangerous hot spots, it’s safer to heat cold formula in a bottle warmer rather than in the microwave. Bottles that will be microwaved or washed and sanitised in a dishwasher, on the other hand, must be able to resist temperatures of at least 275° F.

Some parents are adamant about not heating plastic bottles at all and prefer to use glass instead. Glass bottles are heavier and more likely to break than plastic bottles. They are also more costly. For some, the price of peace of mind is worth it.

Please keep the following in mind when doing your homework:

Look for bottles that manage reflux as well as colic if your kid has been diagnosed with it.
Some bottom-vent bottles may not fit in a bottle warmer, so if you have a favourite warmer, consider switching.
Not all bottles can be washed in the dishwasher. If this feature is crucial to you, choose wisely.

Heat sensors are included.

In ancient movies, Dad would check the temperature of milk by squeezing a drop on his wrist. Now, all you have to do is look at a few bottles to see if it’s ready. Goldilocks heat sensors, which change colour to indicate if the beverage is too hot, too cold, or just right, are found in many bottles.
Brushes for bottles

To channel gas, certain anti-colic bottles have unique forms that can be difficult to clean in the dishwasher or with a conventional bottle brush. If your bottle is tilted or formed in an unusual way, it should come with a cleaning brush to keep it clean, safe, and free of debris.

Colic generally goes away as strangely as it appeared when a baby is four months old.

Feeding without using your hands

Colicky babies are notorious for being slow eaters, and busy parents don’t always have the time to feed them. Some bottle systems allow for hands-free feeding, allowing you and your baby to eat at the same time. Keep in mind that many hands-free systems have age restrictions.

Other factors to consider include:

Distinct babies have different preferences in terms of nipple forms and textures.
Handles may be useful for older babies who need to grip the bottle.
When travelling, caps are necessary to keep the bottle clean.
