How To Buy The Best Baby Bottle

Best baby bottles

Looking to buy the best baby bottle? Check out our guide below and you’ll be well-placed to select the right one for you.

When shopping for a baby bottle as a new parent, you may be startled by the variety of alternatives available.
The basic bottle can come in a number of sizes and shapes, as well as materials and teat designs.

Don’t be alarmed.
Things aren’t as complicated as they appear at first.
Plus, because bottles are relatively inexpensive, you can always switch brands if you or your kid don’t like one.

Our top suggestions and questions for picking the correct bottle are included below, followed by our picks for the best baby bottles on the market.

What is the best way to choose a baby bottle?

The basic components of all baby bottles are the same: a main bottle portion and a teat, with a screw-ring connecting the two.
However, each model has its own unique features, and there’s no way to know which one your baby enjoys unless they sample a few – therefore, if you can, buy one bottle in several different brands to see which one works best for both of you.

Each bottle variety has its own set of benefits, so consider how frequently you’ll be using your bottles before making your decision.
Even if you plan to breastfeed, having a few bottles on hand can be beneficial; a bottle of expressed or formula feed can be more handy when you go out in public, and handing over a night-time or early morning feed to your partner can help your mental condition in the early months.
You’ll need enough bottles for eight feeds a day if you’re bottle-feeding.
A couple bottles will suffice if you’re co-feeding or just want a back-up plan.

Remember that milk doesn’t have to be served hot; room temperature is good, but cold from the fridge isn’t.
We started our newborn on room temperature, ready-to-feed milk bottles from the beginning (you can read more about this further down), which made nighttime feeding and feeds in public much easier.

What bottle size should I get?

Baby bottles come in a wide range of sizes.
The capacity of newborn bottles is typically 150ml (5oz), increasing to around 250ml (9oz) for older babies.
Some sets include a variety of sizes.
When making up formula, all bottles feature measurements on the side to assist you put the proper amount of water in.
If your kid is guzzling 9 oz per feed, some companies offer larger bottles.

I’m not sure which bottle teat to get.

Although some bottles still include rubber latex, almost all teats are constructed of clear silicone.
It’s worth noting that the latter can induce allergic reactions in some newborns.
The shape of a teat varies greatly between bottle types and models: for babies, you might see a wide, flat teat that looks like a thumb and is designed to simulate a nipple and fit in tiny mouths.
For older babies, the form will be more bulbous, widening out to the bottle.

Teats for newborns are frequently labelled “slow-flow,” allowing less milk to get through to avoid flooding tiny lips.
Around six months old, your baby will move to a larger teat size (and faster flow) – but this is merely a guide.
You’ll know when your kid is ready to move up, so don’t keep them on the lower teats any longer than necessary.
Taking a long time to complete a bottle (anything longer than roughly 20 minutes); falling asleep or appearing fatigued at the conclusion of a feed due to how hard they’ve been sucking; drinking less than previously; making more of a mess, or becoming frustrated are all signs that your baby is ready to move up.

It’s also worth noting that the thickness of breastfeeding and formula milk differs.
Because breast milk is thinner and more akin to water, if you’re expressing into a bottle, your infant may want a slower teat to stop the flow.
Don’t be shocked if your kid need a quicker flow teat if you’ve been expressing and are now switching to formula.

The majority of teats contain built-in reinforcing features to keep them from collapsing when the baby suckles.
Meanwhile, valves allow air into the bottle, allowing the infant to suck milk constantly without creating a vacuum in the bottle: these can be integrated into the teat itself or into the ring that connects it to the bottle, and are marketed as “anti colic.”

What exactly is colic?

Many bottle makers say that their designs assist to prevent colic, an unpleasant ailment that doctors don’t fully understand and that could be caused by trapped wind, indigestion, or physical feeding difficulties.

A valve that keeps the pressure within the bottle consistent makes it easier for the baby to feed.
The baby will suck it up into their soft palate and then stroke it with their tongue to bring the milk in if they have a soft nipple region.
The bulb behind the nipple in the teat should operate as a milk reservoir, keeping the baby from taking in air and therefore avoiding trapped wind.

If your baby appears to have indigestion, try a few different feed formulations as well as various teats.

What’s the best way to make up a bottle?

When our baby was a newborn, we employed a small technique of buying ready-to-feed formula bottles to store in the bedroom overnight.
We served them to him at room temperature, as well.
We could then pour the sterilised milk into a sterilised bottle and feed him right away without having to leave the room when he awoke.
It’s almost as simple as breastfeeding.
Most supermarkets, neighbourhood stores, Mothercare, and online retailers sell ready-to-feed bottles.
Because they’re more expensive than formula powder, you’ll have to weigh the cost versus the convenience.

It’s also absolutely fine to feed ready-to-feed milk bottles at room temperature.
At 3 a.m., you’ll save even more time and effort.
The bottles must be kept in the fridge once opened, which means you’ll have to rewarm the milk.
Always read the manufacturer’s instructions before using the product.

The instructions for formula can be a little perplexing.
The powder is no longer sterile after the formula bag is opened, according to the rule of thumb.
To sterilise it, immerse it in water that is hotter than 70 degrees Fahrenheit — even boiling water will suffice.
You may just top it up with cold water once the germs in the powder have been “killed” by the shot of boiling water.

When it comes to bottle feeding, what else do I require?

You’ll also need a way to sterilise the bottles, which you can achieve with a standalone steam steriliser, a sterilising box in the microwave, or sterilising tablets in cold water.
An automatic formula prep machine can save you a lot of time and fumbling around if you’re making a lot of formula.
We bought a Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep machine, which has been a miracle for rapidly and safely preparing feeds.

Finally, you’ll need a device to express breast milk if you’re using bottles with expressed breast milk — check our overview of the best electric breast pumps.

Baby Bottle FAQs

Why do I need to sterilize my baby’s bottles?

Bacterial development and other forms of contamination can be reduced by sterilising feeding bottles.
Infections will not spread to your baby if you keep him or her clean.

What are the different methods of sterilizing feeding bottles?

Sterilization of feeding bottles can be done in a variety of methods.
To do so, special equipment such as microwaves and steam sterilisers are available.
The most straightforward method is to boil the bottle components and nipple for a few minutes.
However, in such instances, it’s critical to double-check the product’s quality and heat-resistant capabilities.

Should bottles be BPA-free?

BPA is a chemical that is used with polycarbonate plastic to make storage containers such as feeding bottles, drink bottles, and sports equipment.
If the chemical is exposed to too much heat, it may mix with the contents of the feeding bottle.
Furthermore, considering your baby’s small height, excessive exposure to high levels of BPA through plastic goods may be detrimental.
As a result, when purchasing feeding devices, make sure they are BPA-free.

How can I make sure that my baby is drinking comfortably from the bottle?

Ascertain that your infant can readily latch on to the bottle and suckle the milk without difficulty.
Make sure your infant is calm during the feed and continues to be active thereafter.
If your baby does not vomit after a feed, it is apparent that he or she is at ease with the bottle.

Why does my baby drip milk from one side of her mouth?

Examine the nipple and hole size of the bottle.
If the infant consumes more air than milk, or if the nipple hole is larger than necessary, the baby may find it difficult to swallow more milk at once.
The milk may spill from one side of the baby’s mouth in this situation.
On the other side, you might need to make sure you’re in the right feeding position.

How to choose between glass-made, plastic-made or disposable bottles?

Choose glass bottles if you have time to sterilise and clean them.
If you do decide to purchase plastic bottles, be sure they are BPA-free.
Traveling with disposable bottles is a good idea.
Use them only once in a while.

Do I really need a sterilizer?

To determine whether your feeding bottle requires sterilisation, consult the manufacturer’s instructions.
Sterilization is not necessary in some feeding bottles.
If the feeding bottle needs to be sterilised, and you’re a busy parent, use steam or a microwave steriliser.

What is the difference between ready-made formula milk and powdered formula milk?

For feeding, powdered formula milk needs be combined with water, although ready-made formula milk can be fed straight from the packet.

Can I prepare a feeding formula and store it in the fridge for later?

It is safe to keep formula feed in the fridge for two or three hours and then utilise it.
If you’re going to keep it in the fridge, make sure to reheat it before giving it to your infant.
