Best Drum Kits

Looking to buy the best Drum Kit? Check out our guide below and you’ll be well-placed to select the correct one for you.

Investing in your first drum set

If you’re just getting started with drumming, you’ll probably start with a five-piece kit, which includes a bass (or kick) drum, two rack toms, a floor tom, and a snare drum.
Most of the time, you’ll also need to budget for a set of cymbals and stands (also known as hardware), so keep that in mind as you shop.

The vast majority of manufacturers or stores, on the other hand, will sell packages that include everything you need to get started, including a pair of drumsticks or a drum stool (also known as a drum throne).
Take a look at our best beginner drum sets page for more beginner-specific information.

Putting together your drum set

The most important thing you’ll ever do as a drummer is to set up your drum equipment in the most ergonomic way possible from the outset.
It creates the foundation for everything you do, every sound you make, and every song you rip on, so take your time and make sure you’re as relaxed as possible.

Consider how the angles of the drums will affect how you strike them.
Do your toms and bass drum seem to be a long way from your throne?
Is everything accessible and enjoyable to play?
At the end of the day, it’s all about ergonomics and efficiency.
If even the most basic of tasks makes you uncomfortable, it’s likely that you need to rearrange your furniture.

A drum set that isn’t properly set up can be difficult to play at best.
In the worst-case scenario, it could result in long-term harm.

What is the best way to tune your drum kit?

Tuning up your drum equipment is a process that is frequently forgotten, but it is critical.
You can have the nicest drums and drum heads in the world, but if you can’t tune them properly, they’re worthless.

In a nutshell, every time you move a tension rod with your drum key, the tension of the head in that area increases or decreases.
As a result, it’s critical that you spin each tension rod in the same direction.

Tighten all the tension rods as much as you can with your fingers before installing a new drum head.
This is referred to as being “finger tight,” and it is a good approximation of equal tension throughout the skull.

From here, you can apply tension with your drum key, usually a full or half turn at a time.
It’s preferable to do it in a’star’ pattern so that the tension is consistent throughout the head.
Consider it a clock face, and move from 12 to 6, 11, 5, and so on.
Give that head a hit once it’s up to snuff and see what you think.
Keep adding tension if the pitch needs to rise; reduce tension if it needs to fall.
Simple.

‘All-in-One’ package kits vs. shell packs

If you’ve been doing your own research, you’ve probably come across the term “shell pack” a lot.
A shell pack is normally only purchased when purchasing a higher-end intermediate or professional drum kit.

Purchasing a shell pack entails exactly that.
You’re only purchasing the toms and bass drum shells.
The hoops, lugs, and other hardware are obviously included, but that’s it.

Because cymbals and snare drums are such personal objects, most people choose to purchase them individually so they may obtain exactly what they want.
Also, because the snare and cymbals can completely transform a kit’s personality, it’s a good idea to have a few different snare and cymbal sets that you can mix and match with your shell pack for each event or session.

The majority of ‘all-in-one’ package kits are on the lower end of the price spectrum.
A snare drum will be supplied at the very least, and sometimes even a set of cymbals and cymbal stands.
Granted, you won’t be able to mix and match right away, but these sets are perfect for anyone who isn’t sure what they want.

However, there is something to be said for these kits.
They’re usually less expensive and come with more features, so at the very least they’re good value for money.
You can always upgrade your snare or cymbals if and when you need to, so it’s not the end of the world if you don’t like the accessories that come with the package.

How much should I budget for a drum set?

In general, beginner-friendly kits should cost between $/£750 and $1,500.
You might think it’s a lot of money, and you’d be right – but there are so many different parts that you’ll need to get started.
It’s not like an acoustic guitar or a basic keyboard, where you can get started with no frills.

At the absolute least, you’ll need a set of drums, cymbal stands, a bass drum pedal, cymbals, a drum throne, and sticks, which may add up quickly.
Budget kits will use less expensive, less fussy shell materials such as poplar in terms of materials and tones.
Although it’s inexpensive, poplar tubs may sound fantastic, so don’t be afraid to use them.

If you’re an intermediate player, chances are you’ve found a snare and cymbal set that appeals to you musically.
If this is the case, you may expect to pay up to $/£1,500 for a worthy upgrade from your basic package.

For these prices, you’ll have a wider range of tonewoods to choose from, including bubinga, walnut, and mahogany, as well as possibly some more exotic selections.
At this pricing point, you’ll still get your’standard’ birch and maple kits, so don’t worry if you’re not a crazy one.
Those woods are frequently used, and it’s because they sound fantastic.

Experts (or those with a lot of money) will be looking at kits costing more than $/£1,500.
Here, the choices are practically limitless.
This pricing range includes some finely crafted, remarkable drums made from the finest materials, as well as immaculate paint booth finishing.

You can definitely go all out for those people for whom money isn’t an issue.
Drum Workshop, British Drum Company, and Yamaha, for example, will meet your needs for genuinely stunning drums, both tonally and artistically.
You can even start dabbling in the world of custom-made drums with this money.
