Best electric showers

Looking to buy the best electric shower? Check out our guide below and you’ll be well-placed to select the correct one for your needs.

We’ve all had to endure ineffective showers: the ones that can’t maintain a consistent temperature; the ones that never quite warm up; the ones that can only deliver a dismal drizzle that leaves you freezing with half the shampoo still in your hair.

That is not how a shower should be.

You may start your day with a nice scrub and become properly clean with a good, forceful spray and some heat behind it.

To be honest, not everyone prefers the electric shower.

Mixer showers provide more oomph and are more consistent, whereas a power shower with a pump delivers a bigger blast.

Electric showers, on the other hand, require only an electric wire and a cold water supply, and can be used in situations where gravity-fed pressure is not available for a mixer or a power shower.

They heat up quickly, regardless of what the boiler is doing, and they’re usually more energy-efficient because they only heat the water you use.

How do you choose the best electric shower for your needs?

Electric showers work in a similar way from brand to brand and model to model, with the only differences being the style and controls. You’ll even find versions from the same brand sharing the same fundamental engine, not to mention the same hose and head.

What kind of power do I require?

Electric showers are measured in kilowatts and range from 7 to 10.5 kilowatts.
The more power a shower has, the more water it can heat and pass through at once, resulting in a stronger, more steady flow.

However, a higher wattage shower is more expensive, and because higher wattages necessitate larger cable widths and different fuses, you can’t simply replace a 7.5kW shower with a 9.5kW shower without hiring an electrician.

In any case, if you’re installing an electric shower in a property that doesn’t already have one, you’ll need a licenced electrician.

Any shower’s specs should include a minimum sustained pressure level (in bar) and flow rate (in litres per minute).

You can really measure the latter by pouring water from a tap that is connected to the mains into a container like a 2 litre bottle or a measuring jug.

Then you can calculate how many litres it can fill in a minute.

Look for showers that can cope with a lower minimum pressure level and flow rate if you’re having trouble with mains pressure and it’s harming your current shower.

What are the most important characteristics to search for?

Thermostatic controls: To maintain a consistent temperature, most, if not all, electric showers feature some type of thermostatic control.

Naturally, the more you pay, the more accurate these temperature adjustments will be.

Similarly, nearly all showers have a safety cut-out that cuts off the flow instantly if the water becomes too hot.

Controls: We’re referring to the options for controlling the shower itself, which include buttons, dials, and (sometimes) touch-sensitive controls.

Some versions will feature visible temperature displays, while those built for the vision handicapped will employ a chime to signal when the proper temperature has been attained.

Limescale prevention is commonly accomplished by running the shower through a series of increasingly cooler water phases at the end of your shower.

It’s a smart idea since it protects the inner workings of the shower head from limescale buildup, which might eventually cause your shower to stop working.

Are there any non-essential aspects that you should think about?

Spray patterns: Having many spray patterns allows you to choose between a smaller but more powerful spray, a finer, wider mist, and alternatives in between – albeit lesser models will have fewer options.

Other: Some versions have air intakes or boosted engines to create the impression of a larger flow, even though the amount of water flowing through is the same.
The effectiveness of these is a matter of debate.

Finally, some showers offer more flexible power and water entry options, as well as riser rail brackets that connect to the head.

If you’re installing the shower yourself, this can make a major difference, especially because some manufacturers now offer easy-to-install types that even inexperienced DIYers might be able to handle.
