How do you pick the right laptop for you?

Purchasing a new laptop is a difficult task.
Each year, there are a plethora of fantastic devices to select from, with prices ranging from £200 to £2,000 or more.

The cost of a laptop can also vary dramatically depending on the configuration, which further adds to the uncertainty.

We’ll help you make the best decision possible by laying out the most crucial aspects to consider before you pull out your credit card in this quick buying guide.

What are you going to do with your laptop?

What kind of laptop you get should be determined by your specific needs.
A normal university student’s technological requirements will differ from those of a professional video editor.
Some people will require a laptop that can process large files quickly, while others will only need a laptop to utilise Google Docs or browse the internet.
It all boils down to what you want your laptop to do in the end.

What about battery life and performance?

Laptops with the most powerful CPUs and the most RAM are the most powerful laptops.
The CPU power of a laptop is measured in gigahertz (GHz), and each processor has a baseline and maximum frequency.

Other variables, such as inadequate temperature control, which can lead to thermal throttling, might have an impact on overall performance.
Any laptop you buy should have at least 4GB of RAM, at the very least.
Processors are more difficult to categorise; they can be dual-core, quad-core, or hexa-core, and their power can vary substantially.

Because users expect them to run numerous demanding programmes, an Apple MacBook Pro (or Windows counterpart such as the Dell XPS 15) has a far more powerful CPU and more RAM than a cheap Chromebook.

The size of the battery is measured in milliamp-hours (mAH) or Watt-hours (Wh) — the larger the battery, the longer it will last (in theory), but it all relies on how much power the various components inside the gadget utilise (the display, CPU and GPU have the biggest impact).

Because its internal machinery isn’t as demanding, an ultra-budget laptop with a small battery may last longer than a luxury notebook with a large battery.

Every laptop we assess goes through a standardised video rundown test, with the best performers being a mix of efficient high-end ultraportable laptops and low-powered Chromebooks.

What is the best operating system to use?

Each operating system, whether it’s Windows, macOS, or Chrome OS, has its own set of strengths and disadvantages.
MacOS is exclusively available on Apple laptops, but Windows is available on a wide range of laptops from companies like Acer, Asus, and Lenovo.
Chrome OS, Google’s low-power operating system, is also gaining traction and can be found on a variety of devices.

What is the ideal resolution for a display?

The resolution isn’t everything when it comes to laptop displays.
When choosing between a Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) and a 4K (3,840 x 2,160) display on the same laptop, the latter is frequently more expensive but not necessarily sharper.

The size of the screen and how far away you sit from it determine how sharp a display appears.

On a screen 14in or less, we don’t think you need anything higher than 1,920 x 1,080.
In fact, if you have 20/20 vision, you’d have to be looking at the screen from a distance of 56cm or closer.
Given that laptops with higher-resolution panels often have shorter battery lives, it’s often worth choosing the lower-resolution, lower-cost choice if possible.

The quality of a laptop’s display, on the other hand, has little to do with the screen’s resolution.
No matter how sharp a laptop is, its maximum brightness, colour accuracy, or contrast ratio cannot be guaranteed.
When we test each laptop, we take note of all of these factors since a dark, muddy, or washed-out display can detract from an otherwise excellent device.

What is the optimal number of ports for a laptop?

Most new laptops will include at least one USB-C and a handful of USB-A ports in addition to a power socket and a headphone jack.
When it comes to connections, the more the merrier is the usual rule.

However, it’s important to note the sort of USB-C port you’re buying; while they may appear to be the same, they often have varying capabilities from machine to machine.
Look for Thunderbolt 3 USB-C connections for the fastest transfer speeds; USB-C isn’t as fast.

Also, don’t expect every USB-C connector on a laptop to be capable of carrying video, power, and data.
Despite the fact that the standard allows for it, manufacturers occasionally limit what each port may do.

A full-sized HDMI port is also very useful for connecting the laptop to multiple monitors, however these aren’t very popular on smaller laptops.
It also helps to have an SD card reader, which is something that Apple’s laptops are desperately lacking these days.
