How To Buy The Best mosquito repellent

Looking to buy the best mosquito repellent? Check out our guide below and you’ll be well-placed to select the correct one for your needs.

What is the one thing that is more likely than anything else to ruin a sunny vacation?
Mosquito bites are a common occurrence.
Not only may the resulting itching drive you insane and leave you covered in unpleasant, red-colored bites, but it can also put you in danger.
Mosquitoes, for example, can spread diseases like dengue fever, West Nile virus, malaria, and yellow fever in tropical areas of the world.Mosquitos should be avoided at all costs in such situations.

There are a variety of strange and ineffective deterrents out there – we’ve heard of anything from leaving out jars of soap to eating a lot of spicy food – but if you really want to keep these buzzing pests at bay, you should invest in a good mosquito repellent.
This guide will help you choose the perfect repellent for you, with options ranging from sprays to wristbands, stick-on patches to plug-in defences.

How to Select the Most Effective Mosquito Repellent

When should I use insect repellent?

Mosquitoes are more likely to bite you if you live in or visit to a nation with a moderate climate or warmer.
Yes, this includes the United Kingdom, which has 30 native species.
They require water to survive: some species prefer clean, fresh water, while others prefer stagnant, dirty water.
They can be found around ponds, marshes, rivers, swamps, lakes, and pretty much any other body of water; they usually leave their nests at night when the air is colder.

If you’re planning a trip to a tropical or subtropical nation, check the UK government’s warning and guidance online to determine if you’ll be infected by disease-carrying mosquitoes.

What are the different forms of mosquito repellents?

Mosquito repellents are available in a variety of forms, including sprays, aerosols, salves, and lotions that can be applied directly to the skin.
However, because of the terrible odours that some items emit, they aren’t extremely comfortable to wear.
(There’s also debate about the chemical DEET, which we’ll get into in the next section.)
Some repellents are in the form of wristbands, while others are patches that may be applied to both your skin and your clothing.
There are also electronic devices that may be plugged into the wall to keep insects at bay at night.

Is there any danger in using insect repellents?

N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide, also known as DEET, is the most efficient and long-lasting ingredient used in mosquito repellents.
Since the 1940s, the US Army has issued it to its troops.
There have been a few medical reports in recent decades that claim there is a link between DEET and health concerns, but none of them has been proven.

Much of DEET’s negative reputation stems from a widespread aversion to utilising chemical goods right now, which is exacerbated by its disagreeable odour.
We’ve included all-natural alternatives below, but DEET is still the best option if you really want to keep mosquitoes away.

Is there a difference between a mosquito repellent and an insect repellent?

No, technically but in practise, insect repellents are slightly more effective against some insects than others, but the four active ingredients permitted in “insect repellents” in the EU have all been tested and proven to be effective against mosquitoes as well as all other biting insects encountered by travellers.

Why should you use an insect repellent?

Mosquito bites alone are responsible for the transmission of malaria, zika virus, yellow fever, dengue fever, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile virus, filariasis, chikungunya virus, and other diseases. Insects such as sandflies, tsetse flies, ticks, lice, and fleas can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, leishmaniasis, sleeping sickness, chagas disease, typhus, and plague, to name a few. In addition to the discomfort and itching, the bites themselves break the skin, allowing other infections to enter the wound. According to the WHO, over 500,000 people die each year from malaria, and over 2.5 billion people are in danger of dengue fever.

Do repellents work against other insects as well as mosquitoes?

Yes. Although the effectiveness varies depending on the active ingredient and the insect, all approved insect repellents will repel other biting insects.

Mosquitoes love me. Should I take the strongest insect repellent?

Most likely not. A stronger repellent does not always provide better protection, according to testing.

How do insect repellents work?

Insect repellents work in two ways. To begin, by perplexing the insect’s sense of smell. This works because insects recognise you as a food source based on the’smell’ of chemicals in your breath and skin. Second, a repellent layer of something repulsive to the touch or taste of insects is used.

How to apply insect repellent & how much to apply?

Spray a thin, even layer onto exposed skin areas (not on covered skin). Avoid spraying on damaged, irritated, or sunburned skin, as well as the eyes or mouth. Choose long-sleeved shirts and long trousers whenever possible to reduce exposed skin and the amount of lotion required. After application, wash your hands and apply to the back of your hand if possible. We recommend washing your skin before going to bed to remove any residual. Always follow the product instructions.

Can I use a repellent and sunscreen together?

They can be applied to the same area of skin, but repellent and sunscreen should not be applied at the same time because the effectiveness of the sunscreen may be reduced. Apply sunscreen first, allowing it to absorb completely into the skin before applying the repellent.
The sunscreen should have no effect on the effectiveness of the insect repellent, and there is no need to apply more insect repellent than is recommended.

If you use a DEET mosquito repellent and want to wear sunscreen, choose one with an SPF of 30 to 50 to compensate for the SPF reduction caused by DEET.

Should I reapply insect repellent after swimming?

Yes, it is necessary to reapply sunscreen after swimming or even if the skin has become wet as a result of being caught in a heavy rain shower.
A number of repellents provide maximum wear durability by being sweat and splash resistant; however, after swimming, a heavy rain shower, or excessive sweating, such as after a hike, the insect repellent should be reapplied.

Can I spray repellents on my clothes?

Repellents should only be used on exposed skin and not on clothing. DEET repellents can discolour and damage synthetic fabrics.

How much repellent should I take for a week’s travel?

It is determined by the destination and the conditions prevailing, such as perspiration and heat. If you are going on an active vacation in tropical conditions, you may need to bring more, but a 60ml bottle of insect repellent should last one adult one week if used daily.
