The best olive oil does not come from a single region of the globe.
In reality, some of the best-tasting and most-recommended oils come from places you might not think of as olive-growing regions.
Furthermore, the flavour of olive oil varies significantly depending on where it is grown, as well as how it is pressed and processed before being bottled.
But, with so many styles and brands to pick from, how can you tell what’s good from what’s terrible and get the best value for your money?

What are the different varieties of olive oil?

Extra-virgin olive oil, sometimes known as EVOO, refined olive oil, and flavoured or “infused” olive oil are the most common types marketed online and in shops.

Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) is the highest quality olive oil available.
It’s made with the cold-pressing procedure, which prevents the olives from reaching temperatures exceeding 27°C.
This retains the olives’ flavour and antioxidant capabilities, and usually results in a more fragrant oil.

However, not all extra-virgin oils are created equal.
Because the industry isn’t highly controlled, some oils are of a considerably higher quality than others, so it’s a good idea to shop around.
Salad dressings and pouring over finished foods are common uses for the best EVOO oils.

Refined olive oil is created from black or overripe olives that have been heat-treated to remove the majority of the fresh flavour and antioxidant benefits.
It has a low acidity and is ideal for cooking and frying because the flavour and fats are not affected by high temperatures.

Flavored or infused olive oil can be made from refined oils, pure extra-virgin oils, or a mix of the two.
To create flavour variations, aromatics such as garlic, chilli, and truffle are soaked in simple oil.
Flavored oils aren’t normally used for frying, but they’re great for finishing dishes and adding flavour to soups and pasta sauces.

When purchasing olive oil, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Origin — If possible, choose an olive oil that was cultivated, harvested, and bottled in a single region or country.
This reduces the possibility of receiving olive oil that has been contaminated with cheaper oils from other sources.
This isn’t a significant deal for daily cooking oil, but for virgin oils claiming to be of the highest grade, it’s something to keep an eye out for.

Be wary of imprecise language.
For example, just because an oil is labelled as a “product of Spain” doesn’t guarantee the olives were produced or harvested there.
This could simply mean that wine was brought in from somewhere else and bottled there.

Age — All premium olive oils will be labelled with a harvest or use-by date.
This is due to the fact that, unlike wine, olive oil deteriorates over time.
The shelf life of most virgin olive oils is one to two years on the bottle, although they can begin to deteriorate in as little as six months.
As a result, we recommend that you only buy enough for a maximum of 12 months at a time.

Taste — While some olive oils have very minute variances in flavour, others have a wide range of flavours.
Some of the primary flavours you’ll find in the greatest olive oils are peppery, fruity, buttery, flowery, and nutty.

An olive oil with a strong, spicy finish isn’t necessarily nasty or wrong, but one with a stale or bitter flavour is past its prime.
While old olive oil is safe to ingest, it is unpleasant to eat and should be avoided.

Light exposure can hasten the degradation of cold-pressed olive oil in a bottle.
As a result, extra-virgin oils are typically distributed in dark-colored or opaque bottles.
This isn’t to say you shouldn’t use light-colored bottles, but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning on storing your oil for a long time.

I’m not sure how much I should spend on olive oil.

The answer to this question is contingent on two factors: the sort of oil you desire and the frequency with which you intend to use your olive oil.

If you’re merely looking for the best extra-virgin olive oil for drizzling and dipping, expect to invest between £10 and £40 a bottle.
If you’re looking for something to sauté with, a decent-sized bottle of olive oil for cooking can be had for as low as £4.

Another factor to consider when deciding how much to spend on oil is how frequently you intend to use it.
You probably don’t want to spend £20 on a bottle of olive oil that you’ll only use once every few months because it doesn’t have an unlimited shelf life.
By the halfway point, the oil will most likely have gone stale or off, and you will have wasted a lot of money.
