How To Buy The Best paint for walls

Looking to buy the best paint for walls? Check out our guide below and you’ll be well-placed to select the correct one for you.

What is the best way to choose the right wall paint for you?

So, where should you begin?
Usually with colour, as well as a variety of testing pots and patches to help you visualise which colour best suits you and your space.
After you’ve decided on a colour, you’ll need to figure out what kind of finish you want.
Would a matt or a soft sheen silk look better in this room?
Is it necessary to protect the walls from dampness and steam?
Perhaps spilled food and drink should be taken into account?
What about the possibility of mould becoming a problem?

There’s a lot to think about before you pick up the roller, so we’ll go over some of the most prevalent issues below.

What do I need to do before I start painting?

The quantity of prep you’ll need is very dependent on the state of the walls in question, but in general, the better your prep, the easier the painting process will be and the finer the finish will be.

To begin, make sure your walls are clean, dry, and grease-free.
Naturally, you’ll need to scrape off any old, flaky paint, and, while it may seem like an unnecessary step, wiping your walls with waterproof sandpaper, especially in any glossy spots, will ensure the smoothest finish.
Spending the time and effort to prepare a clean, blank canvas is the best approach to ensure a good, even finish.

Cloth coverings or newspaper sheets are another issue that falls under the preparation camp.
Do you have any that you can use to protect your floors?
After all, even non-drip paint might go awry if the brush or roller is twitched unintentionally.
While this may not be an issue on tiled, oak, or laminate flooring, removing paint from carpet is a difficult task.
So, cover anything beneath where you’re painting, and while you’re doing it, protect yourself by not wearing something you particularly like.

Finally, look at the weather forecast.
Next, you’ll see why.

What about airflow?

Many paints claim to be smell-free these days, but aroma isn’t the only factor to consider.
Most latex or oil-based paints emit fumes that, while not fatal, can cause considerable irritation to your eyes, nose, and throat, as well as nausea, headaches, and dizziness if inhaled in large amounts.
So check the forecast and choose a day when having all the windows open will not result in any extra inconvenience, such as freezing winds or rain.

Also, because these odours might persist, try to schedule a few days when you can leave your windows open, and if you have electric fans, use them to help disperse the fumes.

Is it necessary to use different paints in various rooms?

Absolutely, but when it comes to bathrooms and kitchens, where steam, humidity, and grease can cause damage to your walls, the sort of paint you use is critical.
There are paints designed expressly for these rooms, and we’ve reviewed the best of them here.

So, what’s the first step?

When painting a wall, we begin by ‘cutting in’ the paint.
Before you get out the heavy guns, pay careful attention to the more fiddly portions of your wall, such as around the edges of light switches and plug outlets, the frames of doors and windows, the tops of skirting boards, and, if you have it, coving.

You’ll need a narrow-headed paintbrush and a steady hand for this.
Carefully apply the same paint you’ll use to coat the entire wall to these places, making sure to immediately wipe away any messes with a rag dipped in white spirit.
Another advice is to use masking tape to cover exposed sections you need to paint right up to but are afraid to touch if you’re unsure of your competence.

After you’ve finished ‘cutting in,’ select your weapon of choice — a paintbrush or a roller (we prefer a roller for a smoother, more evenly applied painting life) – and begin to work.
Maintain even pressure to provide a uniform coating in all places, and take a step back every now and again to see how it looks from afar.

I’m not sure how many coats I’ll need.

One of the paints we’ve discussed is a one-coater, but most require at least two coats, so check the instructions on the can and pay attention to the drying times.
Wet paint on still tacky paint will not work, so make sure your first layer is completely dry before moving on to the second, remembering to cut in again.
