How To Buy The Best paint for wood

Looking to buy the best paint for wood? Check out our guide below and you’ll be well-placed to select the correct one for you.

If it’s time to touch up the woodwork around the house, freshen up the furnishings, beautify the doors, and breathe new life into the skirting boards, you’ll need the right paint for each job.
There are a plethora of alternatives available in the paint world, not just in terms of colour, but also in terms of finish, style, and convenience.

Which finish should you choose: eggshell, gloss, or satin?
Do you want to keep your colour scheme basic by sticking to white’s timeless elegance, or do you want to spice things up with splashes of bright colour?
Are you a decorating diva who believes that priming means perfection and that one coat is never enough, or are you seeking for the simplest way to bend the brush?

We can’t advise your own taste or approach to dealing with the wood inside and out (let’s not forget the wooden garden fittings), but we can point you in the right direction when it comes to where to start and what to think about…

How to Choose the Best Wood Paint

It isn’t rocket science: painting wood follows the same laws as painting walls, only with a different type of paint.

The first step is to choose your paint colour.
Color and finish are dictated by personal preference, however here’s a hint for the latter:

Eggshell paint gives wood a delicate, soft, and low-sheen surface while also protecting it from everyday wear and tear in high-traffic areas like skirting boards.

Gloss paint is a long-lasting alternative that offers doors, window frames, and skirting boards a high-shine appearance.

Because of its more mid-sheen finish and the fact that it tends to stay brighter longer than gloss, satinwood paint is becoming more popular.

Those are your three wood-reviving alternatives, while matt can be used in some cases if you want a distressed aspect to your furniture…
But now we’re back to personal preference.

Is it okay if I just start painting?

As always, planning ahead is essential, so gather your dustsheets or newspapers to protect any surfaces you don’t want splattered, get some gloves and safety glasses, and make sure the area is well ventilated.

Take a close look at your surface to see if it needs to be stripped.
Is it necessary to sand it?
Is it sanitary?
In most circumstances, you’ll need to make the surface as smooth and clean as possible so that your selected paint can adhere properly and dry evenly.
Remove any old paint flecks, dirt, oil, or anything else that could impair the application of your paint; otherwise, you’re unlikely to be happy with the results!

Unless the paint in question includes priming or self-undercoats (as a number of the paints included here do), you’ll need to use a wood primer to help the paint adhere to the wood, increase the paint job’s durability, and protect the wood itself.

Do you have any other suggestions?

If you don’t follow the manufacturer’s drying instructions, you can end up with things stuck where they shouldn’t be.
Newly painted doors and windows, in particular, should not be closed until the paint has fully cured.

Finally, buy some good paint brushes to avoid getting stray bristles stuck on your skirting boards.
