How To Buy The Best steriliser

Looking for the best steriliser? Check out our guide below and you’ll be well-placed to select the correct one for your needs.

With our pick of the finest sterilisers, you can keep germs at away on baby bottles, dummies, and just about anything.
A baby’s digestive system develops at a rapid rate during the first year of life, making them extremely sensitive to germs and bacteria, many of which their bodies aren’t yet ready to deal with.

The best sterilisers aid in the removal of these potentially hazardous compounds, lowering the likelihood of your infant becoming ill or suffering from diarrhoea. When considering how to sterilise, it can be intimidating and even frightening, but there are a variety of solutions to fit your lifestyle and budget.

Below, we’ve outlined some key factors to consider when selecting a steriliser for your and your baby’s needs, as well as our top picks for the best sterilisers currently available.

What factors should you consider before selecting a steriliser?
I’m not sure what kind of steriliser I’ll need.

The steam steriliser is the first and most prevalent form of steriliser. Bacteria grow at 37°C, therefore steam sterilisers blast them with 100°C water vapour to kill them. You can use an electric steam steriliser or a microwave to heat the water to the point where it creates steam. These clean themselves effectively every time they’re used, but it’s still a good idea to wash them every few days.

Second, there’s cold water sterilisation, which makes use of sodium chlorate, a refined chemical. This method of sterilising entails soaking bottles, dummies, or anything else you want to sterilise in a solution of either tablets or liquid in cold water for a few hours. The chemical is quite dilute, so it won’t harm your child, but it will successfully eliminate the bacteria. This solution should be modified at least once every 24 hours.

There’s also UV sterilisation. UVC rays, not the UVA and UVB you’re probably familiar with, are used in these sterilisers. These rays are very effective at destroying genetic material such as microorganisms and virus particles, as well as germs and bacteria on bottles and dummies’ surfaces (among anything it comes into contact with). In hospitals, aboard planes, and in more industrial settings, it’s a common method of sterilising.

I’m not sure how much I’ll need to spend.
It’s doubtful that you’ll need to spend a fortune on enormous, bulky, all-singing, all-dancing electric sterilisers if you’re nursing or using a bottle only occasionally. However, the most you’ll pay for a quality steriliser of any kind is £90, so it couldn’t hurt if you can afford it. For a variety of reasons, your feeding plans may need to change, but at least you’ll have one less thing to worry about afterwards.

These are substantially less expensive if you’re not going to use bottles at all and only need a steriliser for dummies. They’re usually also transportable.

How should sterile bottles be handled?
Despite the fact that sterilisers destroy bacteria, they should not be used to avoid washing your bottles. To ensure that milk residue does not stay in the teat or between the rims of the lids, all bottles must be cleansed in soapy water and rinsed before being placed in the steriliser.

If the bottles are kept in the sealed compartment or inside the cold water solution in any of the three types of sterilisers, they will stay sterile for 24 hours. However, bacteria can grow as soon as any of the bottles come into contact with the air.

One approach is to sterilise six bottles at once and then fill them with the teat and lid to form a seal. This means they can stay sterile for up to 24 hours and can be carried in a changing bag when heading out or on a trip.

You can also sanitise bottles as you require them.

Note: Once the bottles have been sterilised, make sure you use sterilised tongs to make the bottles up so you don’t get any germs on the teats. Many sterilisers come with these as standard.
