How To Buy The Best Best tumble dryer

Looking for the best tumble dryer? Check out our guide below and you’ll be well-placed to select the correct one for your needs.

What is the difference between a vented and a condenser dryer?

Condenser tumble dryer

The hot moisture vapour within a condenser drier condenses into droplets of water, which are routed to a detachable collection tank that must be emptied by hand after each drying cycle.
Condenser dryers are more expensive than vented dryers, but they’re considerably easier to set up – all you need is a power outlet nearby.

Apart from the need to empty the machine on a regular basis, the only other disadvantage is that some moisture will undoubtedly escape, resulting in a slightly humid atmosphere in the room.
There may be some condensation on the walls, but nothing more than you’d anticipate after a hot shower or bath.

Vented tunble dryer

Because all of that hot, damp air is piped outside through a 4in hole in the wall, vented dryers are less expensive and more practical in the long term.
You won’t have to worry about emptying a tank of water into the sink, and the walls of your utility room will be dryer as a result.

The only significant disadvantage is that you’ll need to mount the machine against an outside wall with an AC power outlet nearby, and you’ll almost probably need to hire a professional with a 12in wall-penetrating drill.
It’s important to remember that the cost of a builder’s installation, along with the cost of the vented machine, might potentially exceed the cost of a condenser drier.

What is the definition of a heat pump tumble dryer?

Consider a heat-pump drier if energy efficiency is your top priority.
They’re the most expensive to acquire, but they can save you up to 50% on your annual energy bills.
Heat pump dryers use an evaporator to extract moisture from the damp air collected throughout the drying cycle before utilising the same hot air for the duration of the drying operation.
They still send condensed damp air to a collection tank, which will need to be emptied on occasion.

However, you’ll have to measure the machine’s additional cost against the electricity savings.
According to some estimates, it could take up to 11 years for a heat pump dryer to equal the cost of a cheaper condenser or vented dryer.
They also function at lower temperatures, which means your garments will take much longer to dry.
Also, they won’t work in temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, so don’t put one in an outhouse or garage, especially if you want to use it during a typical UK winter.

What is a sensor dryer, and how does it work?

All dryers, except the cheapest, will feature integrated sensors that will estimate the amount of moisture left in the clothes.
The machine’s cycle will finish when the sensor determines that the garments are dry, such as “cupboard” or “iron.”
Sensors can save a lot of money on energy because the dryer turns off when the job is done.
A non-sensor machine will continue to run until the end of its timed cycle, leaving your clothes bone dry and, in some situations, possibly ruined.

How big a tumble dryer should I get?

Ideally, a tumble dryer with the same capacity as your washing machine should be considered.
The dry weight of garments you can fit within the drum is referred to as the capacity.
The most frequent drum sizes are 6kg and 10kg, but the bigger the better since the increased space allows for better hot air circulation and, as a result, a faster drying process.
Consider a 9kg model if you have a large family and king-size duvets to dry.
Otherwise, a 6 to 8 kilogramme drum should suffice.

What exactly do energy ratings imply?

Running costs are particularly important: even if a machine is more expensive to buy, it may cost you less in the long run if it is less expensive to run.
The energy rating labels are a fantastic way to compare models quickly because they show the energy efficiency, drying capacity, and noise levels all at once.

For certain appliances, the EU Energy Rating system will be phased out in 2021 in favour of a UK-specific version.
The former system graded appliances from A+++ to D, but the new system will eliminate the plus signs in favour of a more straightforward A-through-G grading.
When an appliance is rated A, it is the most energy efficient it can be.

Tumble dryers are excluded from the changes for the time being, so you’ll still see the old-style A+++ ratings.
This is expected to change in the coming months, so don’t be shocked if you start seeing machines with two energy rating labels next to one other in preparation for the switch to the new system.

Most of the machines listed below have an energy rating of B or better, so you shouldn’t notice much of a difference in long-term operating expenses — we’re talking pennies here.
An A+++ machine, on the other hand, will almost certainly be more energy efficient than a B machine.
