How To Buy The Best weed killer

Looking to buy the best weed killer? Check out our guide below and you’ll be well-placed to select the correct one for your needs.

With great weed killers available for every environment, you can get rid of weeds without harming plants or wildlife.

The top weed killers are designed to do one thing and one thing only: kill weeds in your garden.
This may sound apparent, but developing a weed-killing chemical that kills weeds on a route without destroying the plants in your borders, or removing dandelions and creeping thistle from your lawn without turning your green grass brown, is more difficult than you may imagine.

Fortunately, today’s best weed killers are equal to the task, and they’re a whole lot gentler on the garden – and on local wildlife – than some of the previous options.
Furthermore, they do not have to be prohibitively expensive, either literally or metaphorically.

How do you pick the best weed killer for your needs?

Chemical weed killers are divided into five categories, and which one you choose is determined by the weeds you’re seeking to eliminate and the location of the weeds.

Systemic weed killers are absorbed through the leaf of the plant and then distributed throughout the rest of the plant to the roots.
This provides the weed killer a good chance of eradicating the entire plant.
They take longer to work, but they’re effective against the plants they’re meant to destroy.
Furthermore, they do not remain in the soil thereafter, indicating that it is safe to plant again.

Contact weed killers: These potent herbicides kill every portion of the plant they come into contact with, and in some cases, the entire plant, as they are absorbed.
They take a long time to work – sometimes weeks – but once they do, the soil neutralises them.

Non-selective weed killers: These ultra-violent weed killers are quick and effective, but they kill anything they come into touch with, including plants and soil.
That means they’re usually too effective for use in lawns, beds, or borders, and are best utilised on weeds on driveways and patios.

Selective weed killers: These herbicides are more discriminating, killing only a specific plant or plant type.
They may, for example, target lawn weeds such as clover or dandelions while leaving your grass alone.
The majority of weed herbicides for lawns are selective.

Residual weed killers: These weed killers are absorbed through the roots and kill weeds in the soil.
They’re effective and long-lasting, but their incredible strength comes at a cost: they linger in your garden, impacting soil quality and future plant growth.

If you must apply non-selective or residual weed killers, you should do so only on walkways and driveways.
Selective weed killers are the best bet for difficult beds and borders or your lawn, while contact and systemic weed killers are safer if done judiciously.

What is the best way to apply weed killer?

Read the instructions provided with the weed killer!
Put on some gloves and get to work if you’re using a ready-made spray; if it’s a concentrate, pour it into a watering can or sprayer and dilute your mixture as instructed on the bottle.

Check the weather forecast to avoid having your weed killer washed away by a downpour or having the combination blown back in your face by high winds.
It’s also a good idea to apply weed killer first thing in the morning, as this allows the unwanted plants plenty of time to absorb the solution and die.

Some weed killers begin to work within 24 hours, while others may take up to a week to show significant results.
Do not reapply without first reading the directions.
If you still have persistent weeds after the recommended time, there’s typically no harm in giving them another dose to finish them up.

Is there another option?

Chemical weed killers aren’t always the best option; instead, try natural alternatives like boiling water or white vinegar/acetic acid (which, while Defra-approved, isn’t genuinely organic).
In beds and borders, a decent hoe can be useful, and there are a variety of tools for pulling weeds out of lawns, walkways, and roadways.
The best part is that you may get a flame weeder or flame pistol.
It’s not exactly environmentally friendly and should be treated seriously, but it is fun!
