Bosch Rotak 36 R Review

The Bosch Rotak 36 R features a powerful 1350 W PowerDrive electric engine, a 36cm cutting breadth, and is only 12 kg in weight. It comes with a 40-litre stackable grass collection box and five central height adjustments ranging from 20 to 70mm. The Bosch Rotak 36 R has Ergonomic handles made possible by Bosch’s Ergoflex-System, as well as space-saving double folding handles and a clever compact design. This mower also features a built-in rear roller for striped lawns and side grass combs for cutting close to the edge.

The Bosch Rotak 36 R is an electric lawn mower with four large wheels that is designed for medium-sized lawns.

Main Features

  • Lawn Size: medium
  • Power: 1350 Watt
  • Cable Length: 10 metre cord, mains power
  • Blade Length: 36cm, metal
  • Number of Cutting Heights: 5 (from 20mm to 70mm)
  • Grass Box Capacity: 40 L
  • Weight: 12 Kg

Power System

A 1350 watt PowerDrive motor with 16 Nm of torque powers the Bosch Rotak 36 R mower. The blade will constantly be spinning at maximum speed, providing a smooth cut even in dense grass patches.

The motor overload cut-out on this Bosch mower is a nice feature that keeps your mower from burning out due to excessive strain. There is no gearing or belt in the way of the power being transferred from the motor to the blade. The increased torque also provides the suction fan blades with a more consistent level of power.

With this equipment, Bosch has chosen a standard electric wire length of 10 metres. So, unless your garden has a watertight wall outlet, you’ll need to use an extension cord. This implies that you’ll have to run a lot more cables around the mower than you’d want.

The blades feature a curved edge to help lift the grass on the lawn and fan any leaves or grass clippings into the grass box during cutting. The blade is made of high-quality steel that resists corrosion and wear and strain. The sharper blades produce a better cut, but it struggles with little twigs and branches, which is understandable.

Height Modification

A lever positioned at the front of the mower controls the height adjustment on this Bosch Rotak 36 R. This is a central height adjustment lever, which means that it controls all four wheels at the same time. I’m not a fan of height adjustment levers being positioned at the front of the mower since they’re usually difficult to adjust, but Bosch has done an excellent job of connecting the front lever to the back wheels, making the adjustment smooth and simple.

The Bosch Rotak 36 R features a good range of five height adjustments, ranging from 20mm to 70mm. For an extra close bowling green cut, other mowers in this class occasionally lack a low 20mm cutting height.

Cutting Diameter

The Bosch Rotak 36 R and 37 R both have blades that are 36 cm long. The blade’s revolution extends inside the deck, beyond the side of the front wheels. This means that the mower may approach very near to fence and wall borders.

There is also a grass comb on either side of the mower, behind the front wheels, to suck grass from the wall side towards the blade. That is, you can cut as near to the wall as a trimmer would allow.

Roller (Stripes)

For a conventional stripy lawn appearance, the Bosch Rotak 36 R comes with an integrated roller. With this mower, your freshly mowed stripy lawn will be the envy of your neighbours.

Grass Box

The Bosch Rotak 36 R has a large grass box with a capacity of 40 litres, which is about the size of two tennis courts. This mower does not have a mulching feature, but the grass clippings are finely chopped and compact nicely into the grass collection box.

Even with the big grass box, some operators find that it quickly fills up. This could be due to the Bosch Rotak 36 R’s exceptional ability to capture all grass clippings.

There are many control orientations to choose from when operating the mower. The controller has the option of holding on and throttleing in the horizontal position or using the Ergoflex bars, which are placed vertically.

Ergoflex is a race car design that helps the person driving the mower improve their posture while making the chore easier. Ergoflex also gives the handle a little more height, making it easier to use for taller people.

On both orientations, throttle controls are present to aid in one-handed operation around obstructions and other difficulties.

The Bosch Rotak 36 R comes with a well-balanced centrally situated carry handle that makes carrying the lightweight mower a snap.

A double swing-arm on the handrail allows the mower to fold over on itself for storage. The grass box is designed to divide and serve as a machine cover. Bosch has come up with yet another amazing storage-saving feature.

Safety Features

A dead man’s button is located in the centre of the handrail. For the controller to use the throttle, this button must be pushed. The button pops out when the throttle is entirely released, and it must be re-pressed before the controller can be used again. Most electric lawn mowers have this safety function, which prevents the mower from being mistakenly started.

Two smaller front wheels and two bigger rear wheels assist in controlling and balancing the weight of a fully loaded machine.

The Rotak 36 R does not mulch the grass, however the grass box can be removed and the mower used to slice the grass into smaller bits.

Is the Bosch Rotak 36 R worth your money?

This is a mower for those who are fortunate enough to have a lawn that is larger than the normal postage-stamp-sized grass.

People with a medium to big lawn can benefit from this mower.
Those who prefer a striped lawn will appreciate this mower’s integrated rear roller.
People who want a mower that is dependable, powerful, and simple to operate.
Those who like a large grass gathering box (40 L) with fewer stops.
People who desire to benefit from the comfort of Ergonomic handles.
Those who like a height adjustment lever that is controlled from the centre.
People who require a 36cm cutting blade of sufficient size.
Those who like a high-quality, lightweight mower that can be folded for easy storage.
Excellent after-sales service from a reputable brand, Bosch.
There isn’t much about this lawn mower that you won’t like. Bosch offers a two-year manufacturer’s guarantee, which can be extended to three years if you register your mower within 14 days after purchase.

The length of the power wire is the only drawback to be concerned about. For a 300 square metre garden that must be over 10 metres in one direction, 10 metres is insufficient. You will need an extension cord for larger gardens if you choose this mower, which is highly recommended in all other areas.

The grass box is the only other source of concern, and some owners have reported that when they went to put it into a compost bin, it separated. Because the box is supposed to break apart for stacking, you must guarantee that the two pieces of the grass collection box are clipped together tightly, in my experience.

The blade is a good size, and Bosch’s reputation is good enough for most people to overlook any reliability concerns. Bosch is known for producing high-quality, long-lasting products, and based on my previous experience with Bosch lawn mowers, I have no reason to believe that this machine will be any different.
