Buying A Chiminea? Get Our Free Advice

Looking to buy the best Chiminea? Check out our guide below and you’ll be well-placed to select the correct one for your needs.

Because it’s impossible to predict British weather with any degree of precision, it’s critical to take advantage of any opportunity to spend time in your garden. With the arrival of Spring, now is an excellent time to invest in a chiminea — a little outdoor fireplace – so you can enjoy your garden even after the sun has set.

Chimineas come in different forms and sizes, thanks to their expanding popularity. Whether you have a little patio or a large garden, there is a chiminea that will fit in well. There are many of alternatives that will tick all the necessary boxes, whether you just want one to huddle over in the evening cool or fancy dabbling with some outdoor cooking.

If you’re unsure what to look for, our buying guide will walk you through everything you need to know before purchasing a chiminea.

How do you pick the right chiminea for you?

Each chiminea has its own idiosyncrasies, depending on the material it’s made of. Clay, cast iron, and stainless steel are the three basic types, and each requires care to work at their best – especially if you want them to survive more than one summer.

Clay chimineas: The oldest type of free-standing outdoor fireplace accessible today is the clay chiminea. They’re popular because of their vintage look, but they’re also the most difficult to maintain because they need to be sheltered from cold winter weather and can’t be used if they’re moist.

Clay chimineas require a lot of upkeep because clay is prone to cracking and fracturing. This includes seasoning before use and frequently throughout their lives to prevent shattering, as well as applying heat-resistant sealant once a month.

Because charcoal causes the material to burn too hot and fracture, clay chimineas can only be used with wood.

Instructions for caring for clay Because chimineas differ, you’ll need to pay attention to unique care recommendations if you opt to go with clay. They require a lot of upkeep, but if you want something truly original, the time and effort are well worth it.

Cast-iron chimineas: If you want a chiminea that will endure a long time, go with one constructed of cast iron. Cast iron does not require as much maintenance as clay, can burn wood, charcoal, and coal, and can be heated to extremely high temperatures without splitting. This also means they burn hotter for longer periods of time, which can be beneficial.

They also don’t need to be kept over the winter and may be used even while wet, though a cover for a cast-iron chiminea is still recommended. They, like their clay counterparts, need to be resealed on a regular basis, although not nearly as often.

Because cast-iron chimineas can be quite hefty, you won’t want to move them around very much if at all.

Stainless steel chimineas: If you’re new to outdoor heating, stainless steel chimineas are a terrific option. Stainless steel allows you to indulge your chiminea desires without spending a fortune because it is both lighter in weight and easier on your pocketbook.

They’re also a wonderful option for people who live in rented or short-term housing because they’re conveniently transportable from place to place. Even better, stainless steel versions can be utilised with any form of solid fuel.

However, the low cost of stainless steel chimineas comes at a price. They won’t endure as long as clay or cast iron and are more susceptible to weather deterioration. They’re easier to relocate because of their portability, but even if you keep them out of hostile situations, the cheaper material equals a shorter lifespan.

What is the best way to keep my chiminea safe from the elements?

You’ll need to “cure” a cast-iron, steel, or clay chiminea to avoid rust and hairline fractures, which can limit the life of a chiminea over time.

Place a pumice stone, sand, or lava rocks in the bottom of the chiminea with the clay variety, and start by igniting a small fire with only paper. Allow for complete cooling before starting another tiny fire. Continue doing this for a week, progressively increasing the size of each fire.

Fix the grate within and kindle tiny flames with kindling for cast-iron and steel variants. You’ll need to light a somewhat larger fire when this has burned out, then let it cool fully.

Follow these methods every day for around seven days to ensure that your chiminea is free of cracks and rust.

For a chiminea, what kind of outdoor flooring do I need?

You’ll want to safeguard your outside flooring as much as possible because chimineas burn so intensely. For your new wood burner, it’s ideal to acquire a chiminea base, but you can also use rocks, bricks, or concrete slabs. Simply place your chiminea on a flat surface away from any overhanging branches or other combustible debris.

I’m not sure how much I’ll need to spend.

Cheaper chimineas can be found online and in garden centres for about £100, but they will rust or break significantly more quickly than more expensive models. A cheaper chiminea is a wonderful alternative if you’re new to chimineas and want to check one out without spending a lot of money.

Of course, a higher price tag does not always imply a longer shelf life. Even the most costly chiminea can crack and rust after only a few uses if they are not properly cared for and maintained. No matter how much you invest, you’ll be able to get the most life out of your chiminea if you take proper care of it.

  • ✅ Stylist Design: Our Tall Black Steel Chiminea is the perfect way to complement your garden all year round. Enjoy time at home with your friends and family burning wood on your patio. This garden heater looks great, is well built and it comes with a poker to help you move the logs around when they have burnt down. We recommend using kiln dried logs, as this will keep the smoke down.
  • ✅ Wow Factor Flue Pipe: Our logo in-print on the flue pipe creates a real wow factor when burning as you can see the flames, the chiminea makes a great place to roast marshmallows. Inside the well packaged box, there are instructions on how to screw the legs into place and the screws and allen key and mini spanner to secure the triangular leg support.
  • ✅ Made from Steel: Our Chimenia is made from steel to give it strength and keep it light. Clay chimineas can be very heavy, unlike our patio heater, which weighs 6.1KG. This means when it is cold, you can move it to a different spot in your garden with ease.
  • ✅ Conditioning the Chiminea: When you first light your Chiminea, it needs to be cured by heating gradually on the first fire. The Chiminea needs to be cured, just like a wood burning stove when you first get it, you will see smoke on the outside coming off, as the paint cures. This is normal and a little smelly for about 10 minutes. If you are having friends round as of an evening, we would recommend you do the first burn before you are sitting around enjoying the flames.
  • ✅ Essential Home Pub garden Equipment: If your summer weekends are based in your home pub, this is an essential bit of kit for your outside Pub Garden. Put a slab underneath and enjoy on the lawn or on the patio. Remember not to use indoors, or on wooden decking, this outside heater gets very hot and should never be touched while in use.
