Cordless Drill Buying Guide

A cordless drill is a must-have for any home toolkit. They can very handy for putting together flat-pack furniture, performing minor repairs, installing a television, or hanging new blinds or drapes.

It’s the ease with which they can be used that makes them so useful. You can reach locations where a larger mains-powered drill can’t, and you can get to work without having to worry about the cable or locating a plug. Do you want to build a deck or a raised bed in your garden? Your new best friend is the cordless drill.

Choosing the best one is, of course, difficult. Not only is there a wide variety of drills on the market, but they are also divided into four types, each with its own set of strengths, weaknesses, and applications.

Furthermore, not all drills have the same power, and it’s aggravating to realise that when you need it, your drill isn’t up to the task. Check out our buying guide below for some pointers on where to begin and what to look for.
How do you pick the best cordless drill for your needs?

I’m not sure what kind of drill to get.

There are many different types of drills available, most of which appear to the untrained eye to be very identical. Below is a basic rundown of the many categories and how they differ from one another.

Drill driver: A drill driver is a no-frills drill that can be used for a range of chores around the house. The most common form of drill, they may be used to drill holes in a variety of materials, including walls, wood, and masonry, as well as drive screws.

They’re lighter than the more powerful drills below, making them easier to manoeuvre in tight spaces. They won’t be able to handle tougher jobs because they lack the powerful motors and high-torque designs of the tools below.

Impact driver: While impact drivers resemble ordinary drills, they are specifically designed to drive screws rather than drill holes. They use a combination of high spinning torque and percussive blows against the back of the driver bits to drive screws into even the toughest surfaces.

They’re often smaller than the other tools on our list, and because they don’t have a back-and-forth action (unlike hammers and SDS drills), they’re also easier on the wrists.

While you could technically use specific impact-ready drill bits (regular drill bits may break owing to the combination of rotation and concussive force), this isn’t what they’re built for, and they’re not as suited to millimetre-precise work.

Where you might need to drill a guide hole for screws with a typical drill and have to switch between drill and driver bits as a result, an impact driver will accomplish it all by itself due to its greater power.

Combi drill: If you need to drill into tougher materials like metal or concrete while also driving screws, a combi drill should be your first choice. These drills and screwdrivers can handle basic drilling and screwdriving chores, but they often have increased torque for more demanding jobs and a rudimentary hammer function for breaking through harder materials.

They’re more expensive than normal drill drivers and don’t have the same power as a high-end hammer or SDS rotary hammer.

Hammer drills: These drills use a more forceful forward and backward hammering action, along with a rotating drill bit, to pierce even the toughest masonry or stone. This increased power results in a larger, bulkier drill that is more capable than combi drills, but it also means they are more expensive.

However, they aren’t as powerful as the SDS drills below, are significantly noisy, and don’t always have the capacity to employ chisel bits in a hammer-only mode.

SDS drills, also known as SDS rotary hammers, are often bulkier and heavier than ordinary hammer drills, but are meant for more heavy-duty DIY projects requiring more power. Small indentations on the back of the SDS-specific drill and driver bits allow them to fit into the drill (no chuck key required, so this takes seconds), and ball bearings in the SDS chuck keep them securely in place when hammering the bit back and forth.

Two-mode, three-mode, and three-mode with interchangeable chuck are the three primary types of these drills. Two-mode models only have the option of rotary-only or rotary/hammer action, however three-mode models additionally have the option of hammer-alone action, allowing them to be used with chisel-type attachments for demolition work.

How long does it take the batteries to charge?

The most significant disadvantage of utilising a cordless drill is that it must be charged before use. The good news is that most cordless drills now use lithium-ion batteries, which can be recharged at any time and maintain their charge well even while not in use.

Each battery has a voltage (typically 12 volts, 18 volts, or 24 volts) as well as an Ah capacity (Amp-hours). The longer your battery should (theoretically) last, the more Amp-hours it has on the same voltage.

A complete charge takes between one and three hours on average, with certain batteries and chargers offering a quick charge option that gets you 80 percent charged in an hour. You should be good to go for a couple of hours of drilling once charged.

That depends on how many holes you drill, the speed and torque settings you use, the size of the bit you’re using, and the material you’re drilling into – as well as whether you utilise a hammer or impact action, which drains the battery faster than straight rotary use.

If you’re concerned about battery life, most drills include a replaceable battery rather than a built-in one, so you can always have a spare on hand. Furthermore, most manufacturers now offer their own interchangeable battery system, allowing you to use the same batteries in a variety of power tools or garden tools as long as they all run on the same voltage and are of the same brand or standard.

What else should I be aware of?

Most drills can handle simple tasks like drilling pilot holes in woodwork, driving a screw, or drilling a hole in brickwork or a stud wall for a rawlplug. When dealing with concrete lintels above windows, heavy-duty blockwork, or thick metal, you’ll need something a little more robust.

When comparing drills, pay attention to the parameters, especially the maximum torque and any indicated maximum bit sizes for drilling into masonry or steel. A regular electric drill, which can handle larger bits and has greater power to penetrate them through, say, a double-layer brick wall, may be required for some applications.

Budgeting for some decent portions is also a good idea. A double-headed screwdriver bit is included with most cordless drills, and a few versions come with a package that includes a variety of bits.

However, the quality of these will vary, particularly from less expensive manufacturers, and you would be better off investing in a separate set of wood, steel, or masonry bits, or even individual bits. These can be pricey, but you’ll be shocked how much easier it is to make a neat, clean hole in a wall with a decent bit.

I’m not sure how much I’ll need to spend.

The cheapest cordless drill driver in our collection costs as little as £37, however combi drills with more capabilities, as well as drills built for heavy-duty DIY projects, will cost more. As a result, the DeWalt 18V Rotary Hammer Drill is the most expensive option here, costing roughly £210, but if your needs are more modest, you can easily get away with spending around £80 to £120.
