The Melitta Avanza Series 600 is a simple and basic coffee machine that does a good job with espresso but may be better with milky drinks.
Bean-to-cup machines are great for offering a real coffee experience with no effort, but size is often an issue. The Melitta Avanza Series 600 is a bean-to-cup coffee machine with automatic milk frothing that is quite compact.
It’s reasonably priced for the features, albeit the controls are very rudimentary, and it’s significantly better at preparing espresso than foaming.
Compact and tidy in appearance, the Melitta Avanza Series 600 has a significant size advantage. It’s no bigger than a high-end pod machine at 353 x 200 x 455mm, but it takes up most of the depth of a kitchen counter. Despite the fact that the coffee machine is made of plastic, Melitta has done an excellent job with it, and the simple design with the metal accent at the front looks rather nice. A standard bag of coffee will fit in the bean hopper on top, which holds 250g of beans.
The 1.5-litre water reservoir is conveniently located next to it and is simple to remove and refill. Although you don’t get one in the box, this reservoir will accept a water filter. I recommend installing one because it will improve the taste of the coffee while also reducing limescale issues. If you don’t have a water filter, you can use the included test strip to determine the hardness of your water and then adjust the machine accordingly. When the Melitta Avanza Series 600 prompts you to conduct the descaling programme, it is determined by the water hardness setting.
When you want to use the steam feature, you must plug in a milk tube, which you may attach to a carafe or just hang into a bottle or carton of milk. When the milk tube isn’t in use, there’s a clip to keep it out of the way.
The Melitta Avanza Series 600 is a low-cost bean-to-cup coffee machine with simple controls. The left-hand dial controls the flow volume, which ranges from 25ml to 220ml, but there are no marks to guide you, so it’ll take some trial and error to get it right.
There are three coffee strength options as well as the option to dispense one or two espressos — either for two people or to serve a double. The water temperature, on the other hand, cannot be changed because it is preset into the system.
By opening the side of the coffee machine, you may access the grinder controls. Melitta suggests letting the grinder alone for the first few cups of coffee because it has been factory-set. If the coffee isn’t strong enough, use a finer grind; if the coffee is too bitter, use a coarser grind.
The tap is turned on via a dial on the right side of the machine. This generally activates hot water for topping up your drinks, but you may also use it to activate the steam function, which heats the coffee machine even further for steaming milk.
The coffee spout is height adjustable, moving between 100mm and 147mm, so all but the tallest latte glasses should fit underneath.
Pouring an espresso, I obtained approximately the proper volume and was mostly satisfied with the drink’s appearance. The crema on top was smooth and oily, with few bubbles, albeit a little light in spots. It stayed on top for over 2 minutes, which is exactly what I expected.
The espresso shot is perfect.
Despite the fact that the Melitta Avanza Series 600 does not let you to modify the water temperature, the espresso came out at a nice 68 degrees Celsius, which is about right.
The first hit had the robust body and noticeable acidity of my test beans, but the aftertaste lacked the complete complexity and flavour of a higher-end machine or manual espresso machine. Nonetheless, the espresso is excellent for the price of the Melitta Avanza Series 600.
Although there is limited control, it is adequate for infrequent cappuccino drinkers.
There’s no way to control how much froth you get with a milk steamer. Simply insert the milk hose into a milk container, set the machine to steam mode, and turn on the faucet. The Melitta Avanza Series 600 pours milk swiftly, and the resulting cappuccino was reasonably densely packed, but the overall product was more like a flat white than the textured frothy head I was expecting for.
Although milk foaming is quick, you have no control over the outcome.
This is a concern for a machine at this price point, because delivering a superior milk experience automatically is significantly more expensive. Overall, I prefer a manual steamer wand to achieve the desired finish, even if it requires more effort.
The Melitta Avanza Series 600 is currently inflexible, therefore it would be best for someone who doesn’t need steamed milk on a regular basis. After you’ve finished with the milk hose, you’ll need to find a place to store it without dropping milk all over the place. It’s a shame this coffee machine doesn’t have the same hose holder as Melitta’s more expensive units incorporated into the drip tray.
Cleaning is simple, although larger projects will necessitate the use of the handbook.
The Melitta Avanza Series 600 rinsing on start-up and shut-down takes care of general day-to-day maintenance automatically. This keeps everything clean and preserves the flavour of your beverages.
However, you must still do some tasks. You must remove the drip tr
ay from the machine and empty it once it is full. In addition to the drip tray, there is a separate receptacle for the used coffee pucks. The brew unit may be removed and cleaned by opening the side of the Melitta Avanza Series 600. To keep everything running well, I recommend doing this once a week.
Other jobs will necessitate consulting the instructions. You should cleanse the system after using milk, for example, by placing the milk hose into a clean water container. The coffee machine will alert you when it’s time to clean the espresso system or descale the machine, but you’ll need to go to the handbook for specific instructions, as the simple knobs on the front provide little guidance.
Is the Melitta Avanza Series 600 something I should buy?
The Melitta Avanza Series 600 performs admirably given its inexpensive price and small size. It makes outstanding espresso, and the majority of users will be pleased with the results. However, automatic milk frothing isn’t quite as good, so this machine would be best for someone who just has steamed milk on occasion.
If you make milky drinks frequently, the Gaggia Anima, which comes with a manual steamer wand, or the superb Melitta Caffeo Barista TS Smart, are better choices.
