Mountfield Princess 38 Review

The Mountfield Princess 38 is a 1600 watt electric corded lawn mower with a 38cm cutting deck with a 3-in-1 cutting mechanism that includes grass cutting collection, mulching, and rear discharge. This mower is ideal for medium-sized lawns and features a sturdy 40-litre grass collection box with 6 height adjustments ranging from 25mm to 75mm. It comes with a 15-meter rope and a back roller to give it a luxurious striped appearance. The Mountfield Princess 38 is the middle brother of the Mountfield Princess series of electric mowers, which also includes the Mountfield Princess 34 and the Mountfield Princess 42.

The deck size, grass collection box size, and motor power are the only differences between these mowers in terms of construction quality and operation.

The Mountfield Princess 38 is best suited to lawns that are up to 250m2 in size. This mower comes with a 40-litre grass collection box from Mountfield, which means fewer pauses for emptying. They’ve also included a 1600 Watt motor, which is just what you’ll need for this big grass. As previously stated, this is the middle brother of the Mountfield brothers, with a deck length of 38cm, which is 4cm longer than its smaller brother and 4cm shorter than its bigger brother. The 38cm deck size on this Mountfield Princess mower, in my opinion, reaches the sweet spot in terms of mobility without sacrificing size. This mower’s combination of characteristics makes it ideal for medium-sized and difficult lawns. With its variety of 6 cutting heights ranging from 25mm to 75mm and its back roller, it performs as effectively on tendered lawns.

In terms of features and value for money, the Mountfield Princess 38 mower competes well with Bosch and other brands. This mower comes with a lot of features, including the ability to mulch the lawn right out of the box (something that some other brands charge extra for), an integrated rear roller for striped lawn appearance, and a rear discharge option. So it’s a three-in-one lawn mower.

Despite the fact that this mower is not self-propelled, the larger rear wheels, dual grip starter handles, and light weight make it a joy to use.

There are three Princess size models to choose from: Princess 34, Princess 38, and Princess 42. The differences between them are shown in a handy comparison table below.

The Mountfield Princess 38 comes with a 15-meter cable, which is longer than typical and eliminates the need for an extension cord.

The hardened steel blades of this Mountfield Princess 38 are designed to provide a sharp cut as well as the capacity to mulch your lawn.

When steel blades grow dull, they can always be sharpened. Sharpening the blade is simple enough for anyone with basic DIY abilities and a few tools, such as a metal file. You might also replace the blade on your Mountfield with a new one. Blades are inexpensive and may be found in DIY stores or on Amazon for less than £20.

Height Modification

Some mowers only have three cutting heights, but this Mountfield has more than that. There are six height positions to choose from, ranging from 25mm to 75mm. The height adjustment lever is located on the mower’s back and adjusts all four wheels at the same time.

I prefer the height lever to be located closer to the centre of the mower since it is easier to adjust. Mountfield designed a special grip on the handle to make operating the rear adjustment lever easier, and it appears to function well. Please see my video review for a demonstration of the height adjustment.

It isn’t the most user-friendly height lever I’ve seen, but since you won’t be using it very often, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Diameter of the Cutting

Mountfield Princess 38 has a 38cm deck size and is suited for lawns up to 250m2 in size, which is roughly the size of a tennis court. Mountfield’s electric Princess collection comes in three sizes, as noted above, and this model is the middle brother.

The key is to select a deck size that complements the form and size of your grass. Remember that the larger the deck (and grass box), the faster the task will be completed. However, keep in mind that larger mowers are heavier and less manoeuvrable around flower beds and hills, especially when the grass gathering box is full.

The 38cm deck has the advantage of appearing to be in the middle, which is ideal for medium-sized lawns. A large enough deck to complete the job swiftly without sacrificing manoeuvrability or weight.

Capacity of Grass Box

The grass collection box of the Mountfield Princess 38 is made of solid steel and is simple to install and remove from the mower. Many mowers have a semi rigid construction with a cloth mesh midsection, which has the advantages of requiring less storage space because the grass box folds flat and allowing for greater grass gathering due to increased air circulation.

So, why did Mountfield opt for a hard-to-open collection box? The issue with fabric collection boxes, however, is that they are easily damaged. This is especially true if your lawn is surrounded by thorny shrubs or wire fences, as these will snag on the cloth sides, causing tears and damage. Mountfield is known for making high-quality, long-lasting products, and I believe this is why they chose to equip this mower with this type of collection box.

Solid grass collection bins are always delivered in two sections and must be assembled. As with a cloth collection bag, this is never an easy chore, but once completed, it’s complete!

Mountfield Princess electric mowers are quite practical across the board. As previously stated, you will receive 3-in-1 cutting options, which means you will be able to trim the grass regardless of the conditions or weather. Mulching is a terrific technique to save time while also helping the environment.

Larger rear wheels for better agility and stability, foldable grips at two spots on the bars to save space, and a central carry handle all contribute to this mower’s versatility and use.

This mower is well-built, and the robust ergonomic handles give it a high-quality, long-lasting feel. If I find any long-term quality difficulties, I will, of course, update this blog. However, based on my initial observations after just a few cuts, I don’t believe this will be the case.

Roller (Stripes)

For a conventional striped lawn appearance, this Mountfield Princess 38 has an integrated back roller built in. This is an excellent addition for gardeners in the United Kingdom. This, paired with the 3-in-1 cutting options, ensures that this mower can handle any job.

The Mountfield Princess 38 comes equipped with a mulching plug, allowing it to mulch lawn clippings. This is a thoughtful touch from Mountfield, considering most electric mowers lack both mulching and a back roller.

The mulching plug can be easily installed and withdrawn without causing any impediments. Because mulching the lawn isn’t always appropriate, such as when it’s too wet, the ability to switch to collecting makes this mower versatile in all conditions.

This Mountfield Princess 38 Is Perfect For: People with 250m2 or larger gardens (size of 1 tennis count).
Those who require the ability to mulch their grass clippings.
Those who want a striped grass finish with a back roller.
Those who require a cutting width of 38cm for good manoeuvrability.
For longer/thicker grass, a powerful 1600W motor is required.
Those looking for a large grass collection box (40 L) with a window.
Those who need a wide variety of cutting heights (6 heights from 25mm to 75mm).

As previously said, this mower compares favourably to other well-known lawn mower manufacturers in terms of durability, cut quality, functionality, and value for money. The 1600 watt motor is powerful enough to cut through moist or lengthy grass, and the steel blades are precise. The Mountfield Princess 38 mower is reasonably priced, weighs 14.2 kg, and includes capabilities that are typically found in higher-priced versions.

This mower comes with a strong two-year guarantee, and Mountfield’s customer service in the UK is great and prompt. Spare components and replacement blades are inexpensive and easily accessible.

The only drawback I could find with this lawn mower is that the grass gathering box is designed in such a way that it is difficult to assemble. The assembly should be tool-free, although this is not always the case, and pliers may be required. However, once the box has been built, this is no longer an issue.

Overall, this Mountfield Princess 38 mower, or its almost identical smaller or larger brother, will not disappoint you (see my comparison table below). Because this mower is the middle child in the family, it’s intended to get the work done swiftly while being compact enough to manoeuvre around tight strips and flower beds with ease.

Remember that this mower offers a lot of features, including a powerful motor, a roller, mulching capability, dual left and right starter handles, and overall outstanding build quality.

The only difficulty you’ll face with this mower is determining which Mountfield Princess electric mower size to choose. They all have the same advantages as the ones listed above; the only variation is the size of your lawn and the minor change we noted previously.
