The best baby walkers

Looking to buy the best baby walker? Check out our guide below and you’ll be well-placed to select the right one for you.

With one of these best baby walkers, you can encourage your tiny ones to take huge steps.

When your baby transitions from crawling to “cruising” with the support of furniture and walls, a baby walker or sitting walker can be a delightful way to offer them a taste of freedom.
Whether you’re searching for a classy retro wooden push-along or a bells-and-whistles activity centre, there’s plenty to choose from.

Read on for our guide to the various varieties of baby walkers available, as well as tips on how to use them properly and our pick of the finest baby walkers on the market right now.

What is the best way to choose a baby walker for you?

The seated walker, the walking frame, and the push-along trailer are the three types of baby walkers.

Seated walker: these take up the most room and frequently double as play stations, with buttons, lights, and noises to keep your baby entertained.

Walking frame: this resembles a colourful Zimmer frame and, like the seated version, frequently acts as a multi-sensory distraction play station.
It’s useful before babies start walking, about six months, when they can sit up on their own and play with the buttons and spinners.

This basic, classic design is handy beyond the transition to walking because it can double as a toy carrier for when your two-year-old develops a fascination with transportation.

Is it safe for babies to use walkers?

Following instances of injuries, health visitors and medical experts across the UK are hesitant to prescribe seated walkers for newborns and toddlers.
Childminders are urged not to use them, the NHS recommends using them for no more than 20 minutes at a time, and Canada has gone even farther and outright banned them.

This is because children have been known to tip out of these walkers and catch their fingers between the sides of the walkers and the walls, while the added height allows them to grasp plug sockets and other items that would otherwise be out of reach.
Physiotherapists have also advised that using baby walkers can actually make it more difficult for a child to learn to walk.

Despite this, they’re available in practically every baby store in the country, and the European Committee for Standardisation has approved them as safe.
To make baby walkers safer, the standard was updated in 2005 (search for BS EN 1273:2005 when buying a seated walker), and manufacturers are now required to make the baby gear travel more slowly.
They’ve also included safety elements to keep newborns safe from falling and getting their hands or limbs caught in the steps.

Furthermore, like with other baby equipment, it is your obligation to ensure that the walkers are used safely, and that babies are not left alone.

Never leave your child alone.
With a walker, babies can travel at one metre per second, so they could be in trouble before you know it, and you won’t be able to save them.

Make the place baby-proof.
When your baby first started walking, you may have already placed cushions against all sharp corners and picked up all dangerous things from the ground level, but your baby will acquire height in their walker.
Keep an eye out for household cleaners, fragrances, and alcohol that may now be within reach, and keep in mind that if your child is in a seated walker, they’ll have more freedom to grasp anything with both hands, such as trailing cables.

Do not leave them in the baby walker for an extended period of time.
It’s a fun method to urge your baby to walk, but it’s not going to help.
They’ll have to accomplish it on their own, with the assistance of furniture.
As a result, make sure they spend the most of their time on the floor in a hazard-free zone – preferably barefoot – and limit baby walker time to a 20-minute treat every now and then.

Check to see if it meets the safety requirements.
All baby walkers must meet the BS EN 1273:2005 safety standard.
Older walkers are prone to falling down.
Inquire with the manufacturer or reseller if you’re unsure.
This criterion is met by all new models, but older models, including those given to you as hand-me-downs, may not.

Which baby walker is the most suitable for use on carpet?

The Zimmer frame-style versions are the best baby walkers for carpet, but they don’t provide the same level of support or safety as enclosed sitting walkers.

Because of revisions to the European Standard, the wheels of seated baby walkers are more difficult to move than those previously available, in an effort to slow your baby down.
The extra safety benefits are negated by the fact that they are more difficult to operate on carpets.
It also relies on the pile type and thickness of your carpets.
