How To Buy The Best Lawn Spreader

Looking to buy the best Lawn Spreader? Check out our guide below and you’ll be well-placed to select the correct one for your needs.

When determining which lawn spreader is appropriate for your lawn’s needs and other uses, there isn’t much too much to think about but here are some considerations.

Lawn spreader types

Broadcast Spreaders

Broadcast spreaders, also known as rotary spreaders, are ideal for large lawns because they can cover huge areas quickly.

The seeds/fertilizer are “distributed” in an overlapping pattern using broadcast spreaders.
You cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time.

They can toss seeds up to two metres distant, although the seeds occasionally fall into unintended locations.

However, because the built-in disc does not distribute the seeds uniformly, it is not always easy to regulate the distribution of seeds with a broadcast spreader.

The area closest to the seed spreader normally receives the best seed coverage, while the surrounding areas are not uniformly covered.

This is especially difficult when distributing grass seeds because you want an even application with no uneven places.

Broadcast spreaders work well on lawns that are medium to big in size and don’t require many tight bends.

Drop Spreaders

Lawn spreaders with drop spreaders are the most popular and effective.

As the product comes out of the hopper right underneath, they generate a uniform spread of lawn feeds.

With these spreaders, it’s simple to be specific about where you disperse the seeds/fertilizer.

The main disadvantage of a drop spreader is that it may create stripes if some locations are missed.

You can avoid this by slightly overlapping your lawn area’s straight line passes.

But not too much, as you don’t want to throw down a coating of seeds or fertiliser that is too thick.

A drop spreader is often a wheeled trough that drops seeds as you go in a straight path.
These types are usually best for lawns up to 465m2 in size.

Drop spreaders are ideal for lawns with a lot of landscaping items that require tight bends, such as flower beds and narrow green strips.

Spreaders that can be used with your hands

These spreaders are small and inexpensive, making them ideal for modest gardening jobs.
While they may have a tendency to scatter seeds and fertiliser granules in all directions, they’re perfect for filling in damaged little gaps in your lawn or reaching into tight spaces that your larger spreader can’t reach.

Instead of needing to hand crank the bigger handheld spreaders, they are powered by a battery.

Capacity

The capacity of a lawn spreader refers to how much

granular product the hopper can hold at one time, whether it’s grass seed, fertiliser, or salt.
The unit of measurement for this product is kilogrammes (kg), and the bigger the number, the less times you’ll have to stop working and replenish.

Of course, the heavier the spreader is to push, the more product you put in.

The amount of product you’ll need depends on how much you’ll need to cover your lawn.

The packaging of your seeds or fertiliser will inform you how much to use or, better yet, which spreader distribution setting to use to guarantee that the right amount of product is dropped at the optimum pace on the grass.

Please read the instrucitons thoroughly and follow the directions.
If you deviate from the instructions, your lawn may be burnt by too much fertiliser or spotty due to a lack of grass seed.

Switch (on/off)

To close the hopper entrance, all lawn spreaders feature a lever, but you usually have to lean down to use it.

Some spreaders, on the other hand, offer a handy feature that relieves some of the tension on your back.

Look for an on/off switch on the handlebar.

This is linked to the lever that opens and closes the hopper.

When you flip the switch on, the hopper opening opens to let the product out; when you turn it off (which you do when you’re stopped or rounding a corner), the hopper opening closes and nothing comes out.

Other applications

Grass seed and granular lawn fertilisers are handled by all lawn spreaders.

Some people, on the other hand, can sprinkle winter salt, sand, or grit to melt the snow, as well as powdered lime and compost.

If the idea of having an all-season spreader appeals to you, check to determine if the spreader you’ve picked is truly multi-functional.

Also, be sure to fully wipe clean the spreader after each use, since some products are caustic and may interact with whatever else you put in the hopper later.

What are the benefits of using a lawn spreader?

You want to do it well if you’re going to the trouble of fertilising your lawn at the appropriate times or applying grass seed to make it seem lush and healthy.

Lawn spreaders come in handy here since they ensure uniform covering of granular lawn care products.

They keep you from using too much product, which is not only inefficient and expensive, but also harmful to your lawn.

They also ensure that you don’t use too little product and end up with patchy grass due to a lack of grass seeds.

Which lawn spreader is the best?

The advantages and disadvantages of broadcast spreaders, drop spreaders, and portable spreaders are described in our Buyer’s Guide.

However, here’s a fast rundown:
Drop spreaders are exact in where the seeds/fertilizer are placed, but they are slow; broadcast spreaders are faster to use, but they fire out product in a wide arc; and portable spreaders are in the middle, but they are wonderful for getting into tight corners and filling in small gaps in your lawn.

How can I get the most out of my lawn spreader?

To calibrate the distribution setting, follow the manufacturer’s instructions or the numbers on the seed/fertilizer container.

The key to dumping an even distribution of product on the ground is to walk at a steady speed.

When you turn corners or stop, remember to close the spreader opening (the brightly coloured lever or the off switch on the handlebar).
Otherwise, you’re putting in a lot of effort to avoid a build-up of product on the grass.

Wear safety gear, especially if it’s a windy day, because lawn care products typically contain chemicals, some of which are caustic.

Features to look for in a lawn spreader

Multiple Settings

Varying lawn products require different rates of dispensing, and you don’t want to be stuck with a setting that falls somewhere in the middle. Lawn products must be applied at the pace advised by the manufacturer for best effects, therefore you’ll need a lawn spreader with a good range of settings to deal with.

Design that is compact

Although a grass spreader is useful, it isn’t the most appealing garden item! You want a small design with a folding push-handle that can be packed away and stored in your shed or garage until you need it. You don’t want to waste time and energy lugging around an excessively enormous hopper, especially if you have a tiny garden, so choose a model that’s been carefully engineered to be compact and lightweight but still having a large hopper capacity.

Pneumatic tyres

The last thing you want while pulling a lawn spreader are tyres that make the work more difficult than it needs to be. Pneumatic tyres are less likely to get caught and perform well on undulating or damp surfaces.

Can be used with antifreeze/melting products.

Melting products are suitable with several lawn spreaders. This is useful if you have places that need to thaw out but the weather outside isn’t cooperating!

Lightweight but tough

The majority of lawn spreaders for household gardens are push-powered, making it a labor-intensive chore. You want a spreader made of materials that are both sturdy and lightweight, such as aluminium or polypropylene plastic.

Calibrated at the factory

Some entry-level lawn spreaders may require calibration before use; opting for a model that has already been factory calibrated saves you time and ensures that your spreader is ready to use right away.

A large capacity hopper

The size of the hopper determines the capacity of a lawn spreader. You don’t want to have to come to a halt after each line to replenish. You’ll need a lawn spreader with a hopper capacity that matches the amount of the area you’ll be treating.

Sturdy construction

A lawn spreader with a sturdy, durable steel frame, a heavy-duty plastic or aluminium hopper, and pneumatic tyres should last for a long time while being relatively easy to push.

Weather-resistant and rust-proof

This is especially crucial if you intend to store your lawn spreader outside. It’s important evaluating what weather-resistance measures the manufacturer has taken, as warm, moist days are ideal growing conditions, and you want to be able to use your spreader without fear of rust.

Easy to clean

You’ll need to clean your lawn spreader between usage because you’re likely to utilise a variety of grass treatments in it. You want a spreader that you can easily hose down and lightly grease.
