The Complete Guide to Installing a Water Feature

Although any ardent collector of garden decorative items will tell you that they often have to choose which of their numerous garden sculptures and stones will make the cut for their garden show each year, the garden fountain is one garden decorative item that always stands out. The “focal point” of any water gardener’s landscape is a fountain on a pond, or “water feature,” as they are now known. It’s no surprise that gardeners are lowering the size of their lawns to make room for a private oasis or a charming and whimsical water feature in their gardens. They are not only healthy for the environment, but they also give an element of unique style to your outdoor living space’s decor. Some gardens go so far as to suggest that if you don’t have a water feature in your garden, you’re missing out on not just a valuable addition to your landscape, but also a valuable addition to your peace of mind.

No other garden ornamental item compares to the attractiveness that a water feature brings to your property in terms of aesthetics. Most gardeners, however, feel that the extra advantage of stress relief makes the upkeep of these water features worth every penny spent and minute spent keeping them. Simply put, they are calming to the soul.

A water feature, whether small or large, may turn your garden into a private hideaway, a fascinating and hypnotic centrepiece, or a compliment to the space you use for entertaining in your outdoor living area.

While landscapers can provide a custom-designed water feature almost instantly, it can be highly expensive. There’s no reason you can’t do it yourself and save some money with only a quick trip to the garden supply store and a few tools. It is simple to make a water garden with a little design, preparation, and digging. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

Location, Location, Location is the name of the game when it comes to planning. You’ll want to find a prime location for your fountain and pond, just like you would for real estate.

Here are some things to think about:

Decide how you’ll use your water feature first. Will you utilise it merely to enjoy a lovely view from inside your home, or will you want to create an outside dining and entertaining environment? Are you someone who fantasises about living in an isolated and peaceful environment? Perhaps you have in mind a meditation garden or a garden setting where you can simply sit and relax with a nice book? Consider why you want to add a water feature to your landscaping and what you hope to achieve.

Consider whether your preferred site is shaded by trees that will lose their leaves or needles. If this is the case, the amount of upkeep required to maintain your water feature clean will increase. Consider your landscape’s slope, your soil (clay is preferable), the quantity of sun and shade in the region, and availability to water through hose or water line, as well as access to an electrical outlet.

Make sure your water feature is built on level ground and above the lowest point in your yard where rain water could collect. Setting your pond at a higher elevation than the lowest point will minimise overflow during severe rains and will protect your fish, plants, and anything else around your water feature from being washed away.

Another thing to think about is how much sun and shade your water feature will get on a daily basis. About 6 hours of sunlight per day is ideal for both plant growth and algae control. Furthermore, not only will the number of plants available for planting around the water garden be limited, but it will also increase the quantity of algae that will accumulate.

Consider the location and accessibility of your power outlet. Is there a GFCI available, or would you have to install one? Keep in mind that the typical length of a pump’s cord is only 6′. Finally, and maybe most critically, avoid building your water feature over gas, electrical, telephone, cable, and/or sewer lines while choosing a place. Remember to CALL AHEAD OF TIME BEFORE YOU DIG! With one simple phone call to 811, you may have your underground utility lines tagged for free. Your call will be routed to your local One Call Center when you dial 811 from anywhere in the country. Operators at a local One Call Center will ask you where you’re digging and then route your call to the appropriate utility companies. Within a few days, your utility companies will send an expert locator to your area to mark your lines. You’ll know the approximate placement of your utility lines once your underground lines have been marked, and you’ll be able to dig securely because knowing what’s underneath protects you and your family.

Preparation The Shopping List, or What You’ll Need:

One garden (submersible) pump – The most crucial aspect of a clean and efficient pond is the pump. Take a look at the GPH value. The number of gallons of water displaced per hour is indicated by this factor. For a modest garden pond, 120 GPH should suffice. The water should be turned between 1/2 and 1 time each hour, according to every water pump brand. Given this, you might believe that a 120 GPH pump would suffice for a 240 gallon pond. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll need enough pumping power to provide your fountain a good stream of water. As a result, in this case, a greater GPH pump would be required to power your fountain. It’s only a mathematical equation to figure it all out. (While you get your calculator, I’ll wait.) A cubic foot contains 7.5 gallons of water.

The number of gallons of water your pond will contain is calculated by multiplying the number of cubic feet in your premade pond liner by 7.5. Divide that by half to find the right GPH for your pond pump, and add a little more oomph for the fountain. Another reason to have a powerful enough pump is that a pump that does not effectively turn the water will become a mosquito breeding site. Mosquitoes prefer motionless water over moving water. You should not try to save money at the pump.

One pre-formed plastic pond liner or flexible pond liner The size of your pond will determine which one you require. I recommend the pre-formed liners for a small pond. You’re practically done if you just drop it in the hole. For larger ponds, you’ll need a flexible liner and will have to build your own walls, which will need additional digging because ledges will need to be constructed in the inside of the pit to secure the liner with rocks.

The length of the premade pond liner is A Level. If you don’t have one, borrow one from a carpenter, contractor, or neighbour who does.

There’s a Fountain. This is the most enjoyable part! This will determine the landscape’s style. One piece of advice: this is your focal point, and it should make a statement about what you’re attempting to create. Also, make sure your fountain isn’t overshadowed by a larger feature in your pond’s design. Planting plants surrounding the fountain will grow taller than the fountain itself, which is a common blunder. Plants and a little fountain. You get my drift.

Purchase tubing that matches the size of the discharge adapter on the pump. The discharge adapter is the “pipe” that extends from the pump’s opening and pushes the water out. You’ll need enough tubing to reach the top of the fountain from the pump, plus a bit extra for placement versatility.

There are several sacks of sand. Once your pre-formed pond is in place, this will be needed to cushion the underside of the liner, support it, and fill in empty space in the edges of the hole.

That’s all there is to it. However, in addition to the above-mentioned basic materials, I strongly advise you to add a few other items to your pond. Although they are optional, they will lessen the amount of upkeep necessary for your water feature and, if that isn’t enough, will make it more aesthetically beautiful and calming to the spirit. Plants- Plants will help to maintain the balance of your ecosystem by attracting birds, insects, butterflies, and frogs to your pond. A proper ecosystem, like real organic agriculture, will keep pests and other unwelcome factors out of your pond while sustaining life in and around it.

Plants should cover roughly 65 percent of the water’s surface. This will lower the temperature of the water and keep algae development to a minimal. Algae is created by too much sunshine, therefore if your area receives more than the recommended 6 hours of direct sunlight each day, plants are even more important to the ecosystem’s balance, and you should cover about 80% of the water’s surface with them. Your pond’s plant life also provides significant biological filtration by eliminating nitrogen, ammonia, nitrates, and other nutrients from the water that algae would otherwise consume. Submerged and marginal plants will provide food, shade, and protection for your pond dwellers if you plan to add fish or other species to your pond (or simply want to keep the water clear). Ozygenators are plants that grow completely immersed in water and inhibit algae growth while also delivering oxygen to the fish. Parrot Feather, Foxtail, and Water Violet are examples of ozygenators. Water Lilies, Floating Fairy Moss, and Water Hyacinth will float on the surface of the water and give shade, safeguarding your fish and lowering the water temperature.

These plants also absorb dissolved nutrients that, if left unchecked, would promote algal growth. The roots of these plants also provide a safe haven for fish eggs. Finally, marginal plants are shallow water plants that grow in the pond’s shallow parts. They are largely decorative, but they also add to the pond’s beauty and give shade. Winter Hardy Arrowhead, Yellow Water Iris, and Cattail are examples of marginal plants. Dragonflies and other mosquito-eating insects are attracted to cattails. Nonhardy Taro, Canna, and Papyrus can also be used in tropical areas.

Rocks are something I collect whenever I go. Rocks can be used as decorative features as well as a boundary around your pond. They can also deter predators from attacking your fish. Flagstones can be set around the pond and above the water to provide more shade, keep dirt out, and deter predators from getting to your fish. Any pond can benefit from the use of rocks as a natural ornamental element.

Garden Statues, Garden Stones, Wind Chimes, and Birdfeeders are all great complements to any pond scene. A stepping stone path leading up to your pond is both attractive and useful.

Consider adding fish to your pond once you’ve established the correct environment. Pond fish will not only help to feed the environment and reduce pond upkeep, but they will also keep mosquito eggs and larvae out of your pond. A single day, a “mosquito fish” can consume up to 168 mosquitos! Koi and goldfish are also ideal options because they can withstand changes in water temperature and bad conditions.

Setting Up Your Water Feature

You’ll be astonished at how simple the installation is once you’ve planned and prepared. There isn’t much to it at all. Start digging when you’re ready. Trace around the premade pond liner with a shovel or hoe by turning it upside down in the correct area. Make the hole’s diameter the same as, or as near to, the diameter of the prefabricated plastic pond liner. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect; you can fill in the holes with sand if they’re too big, but try to get as near to the real size of the liner as possible. Do the same thing with the pond liner’s depth.

After the hole has been dug, fill it with about an inch of sand to cover the entire bottom. This will not only raise the liner an inch above the ground, keeping dirt out of the pond, but it will also make it easier to level the liner inside the hole.

Place the premade plastic liner in the hole and check for levelness with your level. Move the liner around until it is level from front to rear as well as from side to side. To get it just perfect, you may need to remove the liner, add a little sand, and/or shift the sand around a bit. Go get your fountain now! Feed one end of the tubing all the way through the top of the fountain, leaving a short stub protruding out the top. After connecting the other end of the tube to the pump, make the necessary adjustments. Do not turn on the pump just yet! Keep the pump’s plug end near the electrical outlet and away from any damp surfaces. Never leave your pump running without water; it will overheat and cause harm.

Water should be added to the pond liner. You’re nearly there! Fill up any gaps around the pond liner with sand now that the water will keep it in place. Make it as little as possible, but allow for some growth in colder climates. Place the pump in the water, still without connecting it in.

Now, place the fountain where you want it. I like it when the fountain a little overhangs the pond’s edge. Three-quarters are on the ground, while one-quarter is over the pond. If required, support with a brick or block. Connect the plastic tubing that comes out of the bottom of the fountain to the discharge adapter on the pump. Make any necessary changes to the fountain’s location.

Now comes the big moment you’ve been anticipating! Connect the pump to the fountain and watch the water flow out!

Add pebbles, garden ornamental objects, and plants both within and outside your new water feature, and you’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of your labour for years.
