One disadvantage of the Jarder garden umbrellas is that they appear to be mobile in windy circumstances. With just one burst of wind, you’ll have to re-adjust your parasol. As a result, if you’re searching for the best parasol for windy days, this may not be the ideal option. When exposed to winds, the Jarder, on the other hand, should not shatter. Buyer’s Guide for Cantilever Parasols

Choosing a product that will protect you, your friends, and family in the way you want it to and for more than one season requires knowing what to look for, especially in the UK where cantilever parasols aren’t as common. Fortunately, we have taken the time to write this helpful buyer’s guide that emphasises the most significant qualities of the best cantilever parasols, so you can make a more informed decision. There are numerous factors to consider, such as the material, quality of your pole, canopies, and foundation. Will you be using your parasol at night as well?

Choosing the Best Cantilever Parasol Materials

Because you will be spending a lot of time outside with whatever model you choose, it is critical that it is composed of materials that have been shown to withstand changes in weather.

In this area of the world, we all know how quickly a brilliant sunny day may turn into a rainstorm, and then back again. These fluctuations in conditions produce natural wear and strain on both the pole and canopy of a cantilever parasol, therefore here are some things to consider-

Rust and corrosion are the most serious threats to the metal frames and poles of cantilever parasols. Because of its ability to resist rust, aluminium is frequently used for a variety of outdoor furniture, including zero-gravity chairs and sun loungers. However, the quality of the aluminium used can vary greatly, and some of it is very lightweight, weak, and may not be the best material for a parasol if it does not have a solid base to support it. Stainless steel, as well as a good quality powder coat like the one found on the GardenCo parasol frame, or galvanised metals, can assist to slow down the effects of rust.

Thickness of materials and canopies

Wind gusts can stretch canopies to the point of tearing them, so search for a thick material with at least 150 grammes per square metre, and if you can obtain one with more than 200gsm, like the ones seen on the Norfolk Leisure wall-mounted parasol and Purple Leaf products. This thickness will also have the added benefit of filtering more damaging UV rays. A material with a bit of flexibility or play, in addition to thickness, is quite valuable since it decreases ripping.

UV rays can not only harm your skin, but they can also cause the material of your canopy to deteriorate with time, so choose models with strong UV protection otherwise your brilliant canopy may not look the same by the end of summer.

Mold, mildew, and plain old rain are all natural hazards to your canopy. Again, seek for products with high levels of water resistance and materials that are known to be resistant to mould and mildew growth in the product descriptions or reviews. Polyester is commonly used for low to medium budget cantilever parasols, while more premium ones may be made of a different, more expensive material, or may be coated to protect them. Purple Leaf’s heavy-duty and solar parasols are excellent examples of this.

A parasol cover is usually a wonderful idea, and it will undoubtedly extend the life of the item. This is especially true if you intend to leave it outside during the autumn and winter months, or even if you intend to store it in the garage. Although some models include a free cover, they are frequently of poor quality, and I would recommend investing in a nicer one if you want to maintain your parasol looking its best. That so, it is feasible to get a low-cost cantilever parasol with a high-quality cover, such as the GardenCo parasol we chose for our list for this very reason.

Stand-alone or wall-mounted

To deal with the types of winds that blow across these islands, I recommend investing in a parasol with a large base or installing a wall-mounted cantilever parasol like the fantastic ones from Norfolk Leisure. Some lesser models will have nothing but a few legs poking out as a stand, but these are almost useless against even the faintest breeze, and you’ll almost certainly have to buy or make your own base.

The thing to know about these bases is that they usually need to be filled with water or sand to add weight, thus the larger the stand, the heavier it can possibly be. If we haven’t made it plain already, the heavier the better.

Another option is to purchase a wall-mounted cantilever parasol. As the name implies, these are fastened to the wall of your home using a bracket, so there is no need for a weighted foundation. Installation is a little more difficult with this type of parasol, and it will become a permanent addition to your home, so make sure you’re okay with that before purchasing.

If you want to make your own cement base, this video will show you how to accomplish it. Please disregard the video’s music selection and visual quality; it was simply something I found on YouTube.

Will you use your cantilever parasol at night as well?

In the summer, nothing beats sharing a drink and some delicious BBQ appetisers with friends on the patio. I actually enjoy it so much that I’ve purchased many patio heaters so that I can do it pretty much all year!

If you want to amaze your guests and add a little extra to the atmosphere, you may get cantilever parasols with built-in LED lights or even larger illumination. These lights are powered by solar cells, so you don’t have to worry about running up your electric bill or harming the environment. However, the quality of the lights, solar panels, and wiring can vary greatly, and the ones on cheaper parasols may not last as long. Check out the reviews below to see why we chose the Purple Leaf solar parasol for our ‘best of’ list.

What should I expect to pay for a cantilever parasol?

To be honest, it’s nearly impossible to answer without knowing a lot about you personally. The price range for cantilever parasols is quite broad, ranging from as little as 70-80 pounds for the vounot parasol to well over a thousand or two.

Large and high-quality cantilever parasols can be expensive.

As with most things, the more you pay, the higher the quality. I will add, though, that there may not be much of a difference between something that costs 200 quid and something that costs 300 quid. The difference between the cheapest models and the more costly ones, on the other hand, should be very obvious, as we explain in our assessment of the best heavy-duty parasol- the Purple leaf 2.7m x 3.3m model.

I guess I’d have to say that if you’re going to use your parasol a lot and want one that will last for years, you should dig a little deeper into your purse and pay for quality. If, on the other hand, this is your first time purchasing one of these products and you simply want to test them out, you should be fine with something lower on the price scale.

What is a cantilever parasol, and how does it differ from a conventional parasol?

Most people understand what a normal parasol is, but here’s a brief refresher. Standard parasols are made up of a single, long pole that fits into a weighted base and is topped with a huge ‘umbrella’ canopy. Sometimes there is no foundation, and the parasol is simply supported by being threaded through a hole in a table, as seen in many bar beer gardens around the UK (erm…not that I would know anything about that…honestly…).

Cantilever parasols are distinguished by the fact that they contain two supporting poles, one vertical like a regular parasol and another that extends horizontally out from the primary pole. The canopy is fastened to the end of the horizontal pole, and this simple adjustment can provide you with a number of advantages over typical parasol models, but there are always cons.

Advantages of Cantilever Parasols

So, what makes a person prefer a cantilever parasol over a standard one? To answer this, we must first consider the disadvantages of a typical model.

I’m sure we’ve all had that experience where we’re seated around a table and the shade just doesn’t quite reach, or we’re happy enjoying the shade offered by the parasol but as the sun travels across the sky, we’re left exposed to all that UV.

Both of these things occur because the supporting pole of a typical parasol is positioned in the middle of it, and because most of these goods are designed to be popped through the middle of your table, the table itself receives the most of the sun’s protection. This frequently leaves the people seated around the table half sheltered and half exposed, resulting in some very strange appearing tan lines! At least, it’s amusing to other people. It’s not so much the victim as it is the perpetrator.

Cantilever parasols attempt to address these issues by positioning their pole away from the canopy and therefore not taking up valuable space. This means that a group of people may sit immediately beneath it, with no one having to sit on the searing edges. Most goods feature huge canopies as well, such as the 3.5 metre Purple Leaf product we chose as the best heavy duty.

The issue of the sun’s movement is also easier to manage when using a cantilever parasol, as many of them can be turned through 360 degrees on the main pole, as well as modifying the angle of the umbrella and height. As a result, you can quickly and simply shift the shade to anywhere you want it to be, and this function can be found even in low-cost parasols such as the Vounot item we highlight in our evaluations.

However, I must be clear that certain cantilever parasols are wall mounted, and so the range of motion may be less than a full 360 degrees. However, due of the fixed place on the wall, rather than relying on a weighted base, this style of parasol tends to be sturdier.

Aside from the functional advantages, there is also the matter of style to consider. While a typical parasol is wonderful, they are all too familiar to most of us, so having something a little different in your garden can be a nice way to stand out from the crowd. Check it out for yourself-

Disadvantages of cantilever parasols

The main disadvantage of cantilever parasols is that, due to the way the weight is distributed, they are more prone to being blown around by strong winds. This is especially true for less expensive versions with insufficiently weighted bases, and you may find yourself chasing that shed you desire down the street!

However, adding weight to the base of anything, or swapping it for a higher quality one, isn’t exactly rocket science, so if you don’t mind a little DIY modification, you might be able to save a few pounds. Still, I’d advocate spending a bit more on something of superior quality rather than going for a bargain basement item, which usually ends in tears. However, the Jarder cantilever parasol we tested for this post is an exception, providing you with a really good foundation without breaking the bank.

The other disadvantage of these parasols, I believe, is the same as that of the center-pole form, and that is their size. Although you may obtain pretty large versions that are large enough to provide enough shade from the sun for everyone sitting on your patio sofa set, they cannot cover as much space as other types of shade such as shade sails or large gazebos such as the ones seen below:
